I cant think of any time I've celebrated my background
Well, for your German side, like I mentioned, there's Oktoberfest (which isn't all about getting drunk - there's lots of family-friendly stuff as well). For the French side, there are celebrations like St. Jean-Baptiste Day, and for Native American... well, punch the particular First Nations of your ancestry into Google and I'm sure you'll quickly find a number of powwows, potlatches or other festivals.

Okay, well that's fine if you agree with it.
I just don't think that those kind of things should affect others - unless they want to be affected.
Enh. It's hard to live in Kitchener-Waterloo and not be affected by Oktoberfest. Even the mall gets decorated. In terms of big, public hullabaloo, it's probably a close third behind Christmas and Hallowe'en.

Depends Upon My Mood..
CELEBRATE your BACKGROUND!!

Its NONE of your business if other PEOPLE want to remember their "pilgrimage" through the U.S

If you dont want to recognize it or celebrate or learn then DONT!

If its about YOU and how your ancestors got here then EDUCATE!

Love

Dallas

tell me folks ? this Black History month is it a national thing? and these other things like October fest is that national? and St. Jean-Baptiste Day ? does the whole country take part or celebrate or do whatever you do? or what. and Columbus day isn't there some criticism to go with that?

I think there should be. That was the beginning of the end. Sure we have this (sometimes great) nation now, but at whose expense?

yes each nation has a past, which should never be hidden and should be taught openly in schools to the young , but i am not sure if these kind of things can be divisive.

Yes, it's a national thing.
October-fest is national, too, but it's used more as a drinking holiday than anything. And it was certainly not brought up in an educational way while I was attending elementary or high school.
St. Jean-Baptiste Day I have never seen celebrated by anyone, ever. Not even at the super-Catholic Uni I used to attend.

Well, as far as my experience went in elementary school and high school, I've never run into anything similar. At least in terms of how much educational material is presented on the subject for such a long time and to so many people, press coverage, etc.

But, as I said, I can't speak for other schools. Although from everything I've heard, it seems like similar things go on all over the country.

So, in my experience, Black History Month is pretty unique, yes.

I went to DoDDS for the vast majority of my schooling and they had a different "theme" for each month.
