"Black History Month."

well is there anything comparative in scope? press coverage? political involvement? i dont know, is it unique?
Seems to me it depends upon where you are.
Black History Month is NOT mandatory nor is it required by the government.

In West Virginia I know of two school districts that do not pay any more attention to February than they do the other months when it comes to history.

Well, for your German side, like I mentioned, there's Oktoberfest (which isn't all about getting drunk - there's lots of family-friendly stuff as well). For the French side, there are celebrations like St. Jean-Baptiste Day, and for Native American... well, punch the particular First Nations of your ancestry into Google and I'm sure you'll quickly find a number of powwows, potlatches or other festivals.
But what I'm saying is, I've never been to one.
So obviously, they arn't hugely affecting to others..

That is not what you were asked.
You were asked whether or not you have had OPPORTUNITIES to.

So you never once celebrated your birthday?
I'm sure I had opportunities to but like I said didn't know about them so I would have had to research them or something.
I really don't think the birthday argument is relevant because there are extremely few people that have never celebrated a birthday.
If hardly anyone celebrated on the other hand, the people that did could easily be thought of as thinking they are better than everyone else.

And my point is that these celebrations or whatever had absolutely no effect on me - hince the fact that I had never even heard of them, except for Oktoberfest.
Black History Month, though, we are not just affected by - we are pretty much forced into celebrating it.
Unless you want to fail that quarter (semi-semester) of social studies, that is.

Its NONE of your business if other PEOPLE want to remember their "pilgrimage" through the U.S
Of course it isn't. But it is my business if they make me celebrate it.

If you dont want to recognize it or celebrate or learn then DONT!
We don't have a choice.

If its about YOU and how your ancestors got here then EDUCATE!
Then why dont we educate ourselves about ALL cultures?
Because I know personally that I know exxxxtreemeellly little about any culture other than Europeans before coming to America, Americans, and African Americans (from school). Because those are the only cultures they teach us about.

It may not be mandatory for the school to do it, but if the school does decide to, then it is mandatory for US
