Black hockey player called "Dark guy in the middle'

I smell something....
Personally I believe that "political correctness" has gotten way out of control. I think it should be up to the individual if they were offended by said comments not the media or organizations in fear of what the media thinks.

"Dark guy in the middle?" Really?

I'm seriously at a loss as to what the big deal is about. I've never heard "dark guy" referred to as a racist expression, nor does it seem inherently racist to point out somebody's skin tone for identification purposes.

They're identifying a player with a number on his jersey by identifying the difference in skin colour. I guarantee they had a picture that showed the group and his number.

"Dark guy" is a bit odd, and somewhat humorous, but I'm not seeing what the big stink is about. I'd probably just chalk up the odd phrasing to Canadian's lack of experience with black people.

This is Canada. We use last names only for hockey players. Anyone who doesn't immediately recognize them, know their name, team, number and stats is deported to the US, because they deserve no better than baseball.

Hockey?

Oh, that's the sport like curling, only less interesting.

Stupid move by the paper. People should know who Subban is, its not like his brother PK has not been in the news often enough. To make matters worse PK faced all sorts of racism from different sides during last years playoffs versus the Boston Goons.

With that particular photo and caption, "(middle)" would have gotten the point across just as well as "(the dark guy in the middle)". But it is the Sun, after all. Not for the most educated newspaper reader.

And as a Hockey fanatic here in the Ol' US, we just send ours down to Mexico. :D

Its really no different than how we in the US identify white players in the NBA. You know, "clumsy doofus in the middle (of the bench)."

Is "dark guy" racist?

I didn't think so. But EVERYTHING is considered racist nowadays, even when it isn't meant to be racist. I'd have to hear in context, though and actually know the person who said it to know for sure if it was supposed to be racist or not.

Excellent point. It may have been meant as racist, even if it isn't inherently so.
