Body 'embelishment'

I was not surprised to hear the following on the radio today (You know, like a T.V, but you have to imagine the scene):-Out of 20 000 plastic surgery 'doctors' in this country (Botox, face lifts, whatever........liposuction -yugh .)only 100 are actually registered with the regulating body, whilst 15% of those are charlatains.

What is this obsession with looking youthful? (Actually, having seen the 'pic' of myself that Soul kindly posted for me, I should seriously think more about this!!!.)

Has 'Society' become obsessed with looks?
Would R.F members choose to have plastic surgery?
I look forward to your feedback......:jiggy:

Lol he is off again!

It was mentioned somewhere else here that too many ppl seek high-status. Surgery of this kind relates to this as to many ppl engage in this surgery to continue their quest.

I've worked hard to gain some 5 kilos overweight, to have a safety margin if 'n when I take a long trip to a far away country. I wouldn't pay to have it removed, quite the other way 'round! I have a few gray hairs, and my hairline is receding ever so slowly. I'm getting impatient, but I won't waste money on accelerating nature.

What the heck, at 61 I don't want to look like a 40 year old kid!!!

I wouldn't say ALL of society, but yes. Not everyone in society shares this obsession, however. Many people are perfectly content with the way they look, knowing that they are not "perfect". I realize that I am not the most perfect-looking guy, but I am happy with my looks. Besides it's not important enough to me to want to go out and pay all that $ just too look a little better.

Not me. Like I said, it doesn't matter that much to me. The things that I am unhappy about with my body are things that I can improve myself (It's called excercise, Linus). Besides, there's a little thing we in society like to call "personality". Maybe you should work on that before you decide that you are too ugly to live without surgery.

Not to sound like a complete jerk, I would like to say that there are times when plastic surgery is a good thing. Burn victims, birth defects, etc. are all beneficiaries of plastic surgery. It can be helpful for those who just plain want it. It can give confidence, higher self-esteem, and other things. I just happen to think it is a little extreme.

I'm glad that someone agrees with me an sees the ridiculousness of cosmetic surgery. It brings to mind that reality T.V. show "The Swan". All they do is take average looking people and give them boob jobs and then everything's better. It's so stupid.

"Well you're the same old hag that you always were, but hey, now you have a nice rack so people will smile at your fake exterior instead of liking your personality just the way it is."

Give me a break...

While I generally agree that plastic surgery should be more for genuine problems/defects (whether natural or caused by accident/injury), I can see why some people would want to have 'improvements' done here and there. I've watched that show 'Extreme Makeover' and, while I wouldn't do it myself (I don't like pain...although I must say, it would be nice to have a proper chin and straight white teeth), they do some pretty amazing transformations - life changing stuff. It's when people take it too far *cough*Michael Jackson*cough*, when their strive for their idea of 'perfection' goes beyond the pale (so to speak), that I find plastic/cosmetic surgery really worrying. And even what is considered 'minor' changes can have unexpected consequences - look at poor Jennifer Grey (Baby in 'Dirty Dancing') - the girl was so fixated on her nose that she went and had it made smaller, and now nobody recognises her and she doesn't get work! I think she looked better before... Anyways, I've come to accept my weak chin and dodgy teeth...it's who I am, and I don't know how I'd feel looking in a mirror at a different face. It seems kinda freaky to me...

There are certain things that can happen to the body that causes unsightly/uncomfortable skin problems and such, and also medical problems for which plastic surgery could be really one of the only choices, but I think people should start liking themselves more, rather than just going to 'fix' what they don't like. I don't see how anybody can like the results of things such as botox, and breast enhancements, because they show false results. A person isn't the same person when they have some kind of plastic put in them to make them look better in their eyes. Plastic surgery is for some just a quick way out of learning true self worth.

I find Botox scarier than having a nose job. Do these people getting it injected into their face realise that stuff is arsenic? And they're having Botox parties??? Ack!

The dental work I had as a kid was a waste of time...several years with braces then a plate, and after all that, my teeth went back to where they were originally. Turns out the problem is not with my teeth, it's my jaw...and I don't fancy having my jaw broken to fix it. A chin implant and ceramic caps on my teeth would be the 'easy' fix, but I think I'll just stick with the way I am now.

Ouch. :tsk:

I neglected my teeth pretty bad when I took blood thinning meds. It made my teeth bleed bad when I brushed them. I’ve been lucky in that I traded my services to receive free dental work from a very good dentist.

I agree with what most people have said here. Unless it is for necessary improvements, and severe cases, plastic surgery, etc., is totally silly. The most beautiful people are those who accept themselves the way they are---flaws and all. Promoting perfection in one's outward appearance actually promotes more insecurity in people---it is like putting a bandaid on a gaping wound, instead of treating the wound properly by cleaning it and stitching it up. True self-acceptance comes from the inside-out, not the outside-in. The way our culture idolizes and promotes outward perfection saddens me deeply....:(

Hmm...I have mixed feelings. For the most part I think plastic surgery is silly, as this cultural obsession with this "perfect" body annoys me, but then, I'm certainly planning to get some, so I suppose I'm a bit of a hypocrite there (am I allowed to say it's a special case?)...although I'm working hard on the self-acceptance first, if that counts. Have a wee bit o' trouble accepting my body as 'tis, and a bandaid would be nice...

Well, I've just been informed that what I'd heard/read was in Botox is wrong...but what's really in it is worse. It's actually Botulinum Toxin, something a lot nastier than arsenic. :areyoucra

Worse than arsenic...it's botulin toxin. It's an enzyme produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum that interferes with nerve impulses and thereby causes paralysis. Nasty stuff.
It's been considered for warfare applications. Apparently it's so lethal that 100grams could kill us all.
Everyone.
All the people everywhere.

Where's that syringe; my crows feet need attention.
