Books on modern Christianity?

Hi guys, I dont know if you can help since this is an odd request, but I am looking for any books on Christianity from more of a modern perspective. For example, books by James Caroll or even Charles Taylors book on secularism.

Its hard to explain what I mean....Im not looking for a "spiritual" book, but books that examine where Christianity is today. I hope that makes sense. If you can offer any recommendations that would be great. Thanks!
