Bowl in the Sink

I hate these things, I've just dumped ours in the cupboard under the sink.

What's the point of them? The sink is a bowl, and you can wash pots under running water, or pre-rinse them before filling the bowl.

People do it in an attempt to save water.

You mean for doing the dishes?
I didn't even know people did that.

You can fill the regular sink, tho?
A regular sink is bigger than a bowl, thus it takes more water to fill a regular sink than a bowl inside the sink. Plus it allows you to soak one dish while washing your others. I live in the desert, water conservation is important to us.

I think the bowl had its origins in a time when many small houses had no bathroom and only one sink. The sink was used for washing vegetables, dishes, clothes and people. Having a bowl increased efficiency and made life easier.

Time however is. It takes less time to fill a smaller bowl than it does to fill your sink.
Well, not really. The sink isn't much bigger than the bowl. My main hassle is whenever I'm pouring dregs of tea or coffee into the sink, I have a very narrow passage through which to do it, then end up constantly having to clean the bowl. My bf just tips it straight in the bowl, so I'm constantly having to tip it back out and clean the bowl again. No bowl no problem, just throw stuff right down the plug.

If you are pulling out a clean bowl to wash a bunch of dirty dishes, that seems really silly. Do people do that around there?

I'm not washing anything at that point, I'm tipping the remains of tea down the sink, which I have a r e a l l y narrow passage by the plastic bowl to do, then I have to rinse to get the tea dregs to go down the drain because the bowl stops the liquid from reaching the plughole. What would you do if you threw some unwanted orange juice down the sink, remove the bowl first? No point to the bowl then!!

When I wash dishes I have a constantly running tap so the water is always clean.

Nah. Dishes aren’t clean to me unless they’re washed in warm water anyways. The only benefit i can see it as is a pre-rinse. Less food particles to worry about that way that a drain screen might miss.

In our old house in the UK we had a butlers sink. It took a lot of water to wash a few pots, solution, plastic bowl.

Here in France we have a double sink. The smaller one takes about as much water as our bowl in the UK took. Hence bowl is under sink full of cleaning materials. ;-)

Our sink is very small and somewhat old fashioned now, in a small London flat. The bowl is about the same size as it, for all intents and purposes.

All I know about dishes is that women clean them.
And that the dishwasher functions best when she
has a Bosch dishwasher.
