Russell Brand verses Peter Hitchens

(no, not his late brother Christopher Hitchens...)

They are arguing over whether or not drug use should be criminalised or considered a medical matter

I love Russell Brand - he is a principled visionary

And I like Peter Hitchens, he is my favourite right-winger - he is also a principled visionary

I think that in this video Peter Hitchens totally out-argues Russell Brand

However, I think I am with Russell Brand on this issue

I only got through the first two minutes when it seemed clear which direction the discussion was going to go.

One recurring flaw I notice in debates like this is that they're simply talking about "drugs" in a generalized sense. Which drugs are we talking about here? Not every drug is the same, and many drugs are legal, whether by prescription, over the counter, or in the form of tobacco, alcohol, or a cup of coffee.

The question is not whether "drugs" should be legal or not, but what standards society should use to determine which specific drugs should be allowed and which should not.

I see this a lot, particularly in media articles where they mention "drug bust" or "drugs seized." More often than not, the "drug" they're referring to is marijuana, which should never have been prohibited in the first place.

I see the premise of the debate as flawed and intellectually dishonest, to refer to "drugs" without specifying which drugs and for what purpose.

Russell Brand is an egocentric poseur: a comedian with delusions of seriousness.
