Brazilian Ju Jitsu grading question

I don't do Brazilian Ju Jitsu nor do I intend to. However, I read that it takes at least 6 years to obtain the black belt (2 years to get blue, 42 months to get purple, 5 years to get brown and 6 years to get black). Most people get their black belts in 8 years.

My question is how it differs from judo gradings ? In judo you must demonstrate XYZ techniques per each grade's requirements and there are no minimum requirements for time in each grade: the only way to get black belt in judo is to demonstrate the katame-no , nage-no , kime-no, goshin-ho , go-no and ju-no katas. Some associations make you fight to get the black belt but as far as I know you need to know the katas (in my ex-association you do anyway). It takes around 5 years to get a judo black belt although some people get it in 3.

I was an orange belt (6 kyu) in judo.

Does BJJ have a syllabus?
