So lately travel has been eating into my bank account. I go visit my bf in London and from Canterbury to London the fare is either around £17 if booked in advance but £30 if booked on the day; as I generally have to book on the day that's already enough, but then in order to get to his it's a long way from Victoria where the train goes, and an Uber is around £19 and a black cab £30. These are literally more expensive than the train and can come to around £40-£50 in total every time I want to see him.

There must be a better way to do this, surely?

London is blessed with the best public transport network in the U.K. My advice is, learn how to get around by bus, tube, and London Overground. Where does your friend live? Victoria is pretty central so there has to be a cheaper way than cabbing it…

Buses make me very ill and the tube scares me :sob: There is probably a tube link to where he lives.

In france there is a national rideshare scheme called bla bla car.

What happens, a driver registers their journey, if anyone on route (or close) is going the same way they register to request a share. The deal is made. The driver picks up the passenger and drops them where agreed, the passenger pays a percentage of the fuel and a small charge.

I don't know of similar in the UK but it's worth reseaching.

Get organised and book ahead.
If you don't already have one, get a Railcard.
Bite the bullet and use the tube - have your BF meet you at Victoria and take you back on the tube a time or two to get your head around it (it can be intimidating but is much easier than you're imagining).
Accept that you can't afford to visit as often and make the most of the times you do.

Also, stop doing his housework!
