Fleas test positive for bubonic plague at South Lake Tahoe, prompting warnings | KTLA

After fleas in South Lake Tahoe tested positive for the bubonic plague, officials closed down several parking lots at popular beach and picnic areas for treatment.

Tallac Historic Site, the Kiva Beach picnic area and the Taylor Creek Visitor Center were temporarily closed Wednesday and were expected to reopen before Labor Day weekend, U.S. Forest Service officials said.

People visiting those areas during the holiday weekend were told to stay on trails and keep their pets on a short leash so they don’t get close to rodents, which can be infected with fleas. Dogs and cats can bring plague-infected fleas into homes, health officials said.

The warnings come after El Dorado County officials in mid-August reported the state’s first human case of plague in five years.

That person is believed to have been bitten by an infected flea while walking a dog near the Truckee River corridor or in the Tahoe Keys area, health officials said.

So, if coronavirus isn't bad enough, there's the bubonic plague as well.

Yeah, I recall hearing of a few cases here and there. It still has the historical stigma, though.
Yup. I think it's New York City actually has running about. Probably more places as well. It's burned a very deep collective memory shock into our psyce from the past, but today it's quite meh. The stories of the angel of death killer wasps amd their Godzilla honey bee enemies made for a much more interesting and worrisome story.

Ditto with leprosy which is carried by armadillos. (Though infections are much smaller than plague.)

People worry about SARS-COV-2, I worry about Tuberculosis which can actually kill you and is never fully eradicated. (Some strains of this disease kill 50% of the people who contract it, and SO god damn catchy.) Even with treatment on that one, you got a 20% chance of snuffing it. TB has been a thing for years BTW and we all take it for granted.

Probably because we have a pretty effective vaccine for it.

Today we have unhealty-hazardous air due to ongoing fires and new ones, oven-like temperatures (111 or so), a small earthquake and of course COVID-19. California is quite the locus for Revelation right now. So what's a few plague fleas - hardly worth mentioning.

Even though we're hearty folk and laugh at problems, thanks for the concern.

It's still pretty bad... 13 million in the USA walk around with a latent infection, which means they can infect others but don't suffer themselves. 9,000/year in the USA die from it. It's still a thing vaccine or not.

At 2.7 per 100,000 that's a higher death rate than COVID, and no one cares.

I have more good news for you.
