California burger flippers are soon to be making 20 bucks an hour under minimum wage law.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.

Sounds good but......

Thousands already have lost their fast food jobs ahead of the increase.

It's a cruel twist of fate and what do you think is going to happen to the state economy when fast food prices are increased even more than it already has?

Will the struggle between having a living wage and price increases kill the whole purpose of having a livable wage in the first place?

What's the point if the extra money made just gets eaten up when things get even more expensive than ever , bringing things back around to square one , and people can't afford anything because of lost jobs and even new higher prices making the extra difference useless.

It's like giving a raise but higher prices will just eat up the extra income literally. A vicious cycle.

It's a catch 22. Damned if you do, dammed if you don't.

Thoughts?

Talk to the parent or the college student trying to get by on a minumum wage about "extra money."
And how do you know that wealthy college students occupy those jobs to get extra money and not people trying to raise families on a non-living wage or college students needing the money for school?

But after all, the super-rich need their mega-billions while those on the bottom can just suffer by not making a living wage. Plutocrats rule, don't you know.

Would you prefer they were all receiving welfare because they can't afford a place to live or have them live in a car? As to 10-15 hours that's how they get around paying for insurance which we pay even more for eventually due to emergency room visits instead of doctors visits. It still takes x people to run the place, employers will adjust.

You did notice the word "or" in the post you quoted, right?

No one can afford to live there. Now they won't be able to afford to eat there.

Good for them. California is a strong state and I applaud them increasing the MW to $20 from $16.
There's 500,000+ fast food workers in the state, The firings are delivery workers and with the rise of delivery services, this move was inevitable.
You'll notice it's Democrats that put forth legislation to help the middle and lower classes, Republicans will be against this due to their preference of corporate policies.

*you can't afford to live there.
The reason many can afford to live there is directly tied to CA's higher wages than most states
Yea because it's too expensive to live there on a normal wage.

Higher wages mean squat if everything else in sight is well above the national average.

It is fine if you work for someplace that pays a living wage ~18$ hr in upstate instead of federal joke min of 7.25
Don't get me wrong. I support living wages now.

Just not when doing so defeats the the entire purpose of making a decent living.
What is a normal wage? how do you calculate it?
It's not the wage, as it can be just about any amount.

It's the ability for a person to keep the extra money without having it all eaten back up when businesses raise prices to compensate and the government steals it all back in taxes.

Whatever effect a raise in the minimum wage will have on the cost of living will affect everyone across the board, people of all economic conditions. But the raise itself will only affect those getting paid the least (the minimum).

Well then lets stop giving the tax breaks to the rich and yes, prices will go up a little bit according to the labor vs other costs but not as much as the wage meaning that those earning the minimum will be better off and provide pressure upward from the bottom.
