Can God Be a Woman?

Ashoka

श्री कृष्णा शरणं मम
Hey guys, as someone who sees God as a woman (The Goddess) I'm curious to hear what other religions think of a female deity. Can your God be a female? Why or why not?

I believe the Power That Is(call it God/Brahman/Source/whatever you will) is above gender, but manifests as both male and female, in whatever form it is needed.

I honor both male and female deities in my practice.

Yes! I remember Shiva-Shakti. Or Sri Radha-Krishna. <3

The holy scriptures refer to God as a "manly person of war," as "our Father in heaven" and other masculine titles. But Jehovah in prophecy also refers to himself as a "mother" that carried the nation of Israel.

God himself is neither male nor female. These are genders he created in his physical creation so that we may procreate, have children. God creates with his vast dynamic energy, all things that we see, he does not need to have intercourse to bring into existence. He is neither male nor female, but has all the qualities of both the masculine and feminine imbued in us, his creation, in perfection, and to a far higher degree than we have.

So why does God refer to himself in the masculine gender? It is anthropomorphism, that is, attributing to God human traits so we can understand him. He made the male first and created the female and a helper and compliment for the male, not the other way around. And when a woman is married she comes under the headship of her husband. Thus the male represents God's authority in the marriage arrangement. So it is proper to refer to our God in heaven as "our Father," not "our Mother."

Ah, so you see women as an afterthought. Something to "complement" the man.

Nope. God created certain aspects of his nature in both the male and female, so that together they complement each other. Neither is better than the other. The male was created with a penis. So it is obvious that God had already thought of making a woman with a corresponding vagina in order for the male to procreate. She was no mere afterthought.

When Adam, the first human creation, was naming the animals he noticed that they all had mates, and he noticed he did not have one, and he yearned for a mate, a partner. That was part of the nature God created man with. God then said:

"Then Jehovah God said: “It is not good for the man to continue to be alone. I am going to make a helper for him, as a complement of him.”-Genesis 2:18.

Dear Ashoka,

The way I understand it, God is not limited by or to worldly conditions or human concepts. Sex is a worldly condition and gender is a human concept. God is beyond such things.

The use of the masculine pronoun for God is like a bad habit, but it’s never really been literal. Some feel that it seems disrespectful to call God “It” but I’d say “It” is more accurate than anything else.

I agree with all this except for the fact that it is a bad habit to call God "Father." He calls himself our Father. We are told by his son Jesus Christ:

You must pray, then, this way: Our Father in the heavens, let your name be sanctified."-Matthew 6:9.

While following our Creator's good, wise, and loving counsel may become habit, it is not a bad one!

By the by, I found the passage in the prophets where Jehovah likens himself to the mother of Israel:

"As a mother comforts her son,
So I will keep comforting you;
And over Jerusalem you will be comforted
."
-Isaiah 66:13.

A little fun fact about nature that most don't know. All fetuses start out as females in the womb and later differentiate into males after about 6 weeks. Genetics has proven this to be the case in all mammals, not just humans.

WATCH: We Were Once All Female

This seems a rather odd thing in nature if we as men assume God creates men first, doesn't it?

I don't read the story of Genesis as a book of science. I think it speaks truth, but it's not meant to be read scientifically. That's why God created scientists to help with us with understanding such things as biology. Then it's up to theologians to figure out the Mysteries of God based upon what we know through the gift of knowledge that science brings to us. Misreading scripture is easy to correct, relatively speaking.
