can non-muslims wear hijabs?

Spirit of Light

ive been wanting to try wearing a hijab for the intention of modesty. I'm not currently muslim or planning to convert, as i want to explore that later in life, can i wear a hijab for the purpose of modesty?
(also, can you wear anything on top of the hijab like a hood or a hat?)
Hi and welcome to the forum:)
Maybe this can help you in understanding the use of hijab or headscarf.

"Muslims do not own the head covering - it is a mandate that pre-dates Islam. ... Our goal at Haute Hijab is to promote modesty (in dress and actions) not only to Muslims but to everyone. There is absolutely no harm or disrespect in you wearing a head covering. If you wear the head scarf inconsistently, that is your choice"

thanks for the great response!
is there anything wrong or considered bad from wearing the head scarf inconsistently?

Since you are not wearing it for the purpose of being a Muslim i do not think you need to worry about it, but as far as I understand the guidelines for a woman to wear a hijab, its to cover their hair.

You could maybe experience that some muslim could tell you that you wearing it wrong. But I don't think it will be a problem for you :)

Namaste. Welcome to Religious Forums! Considering that your intention is modesty, you could always purchase a shawl, fold it a bit perhaps, and wear it over your hair. One end of the shawl would hang down on the front part of your body, and the other end of the shawl would go over your shoulder and hang down on the back part of your body. This is more of a style in South Asia. I hope my reply is helpful. :)

You can even advocate it as modesty standard that should be imposed on society for well being of society(as a human right). You can argue that society ought to be modest for well being - family structure and honor to prevent cheating and prevent desires out of control to the extent that people including kids are trafficked.

A non-Muslim society has the right to become enlightened about Hijaab as a human right and enforce it if majority believe in it.

I don't see that happening soon, but just putting it out there.

My mother wore a head scarf it was the tradition at the time. But you might want to consider style to avoid people assuming you're a Muslim.
