Can you be Christian without the Bible?

Well? Can you?

I can't stand the Bible, with its cruelty, injustice, absurity, etc. And with it's lack of knowledge concerning history and science. But the basic teachings of Christ aren't bad. :help:

With out the New Testament it will be much difficult since it says faith comes by hearing the Word. 1 peter 1:23 says we are saved by the Word.

I reckon it depends on how you define "Bible".

If you mean the currently accepted 66 book volume that has the words "The Holy Bible" on it cover, I have to say no.

No, but why would you want to be a Christian? If the words they live by don't sit well with why accept them? Christianity is a virus that has infected the earth. It kills everyone that complete rejects it. Those that don't completely resist it, help it mutate. So it can continue to spread to kill others.

There are non-Biblical Christians, example: New Agers, so I suppose it's possible. I think though that one can follow the teachings of Christ and be a Buddhist, or a Muslim, or a Hindu. There are those in all 3 of the above who do.

Now really, I think that's a little unfair

So there were no Christians before the Bible?

If there where Christians before the bible they are long gone. Keep in mine it is not the Christian that commited yesterdays sins. If a man today follows gods word and lives God's way he will be saved. But, the belied and acceptance to put any of gods creations before him is a sin. For the Son of my father is my brother. I will not put my love for my brother before my love for my father, my creator!

If there were Christians before the Bible you have run into a rather interesting snare.

What does this have to do with whether or not there were Christians before the Bible?

Yes, but you'd need a church that has a historical connection to the first Christians... that is if you had another source for the teachings of Christ, certainly.

There were Christians for decades before the first of the NT was written.

Depends on who you ask. There are liberal groups that deny most of the the things in the Bible that you have mentioned, and stick mainly to the ethical teachings of Jesus. You can find a group for just about any interpretation of the Bible that you want to give it.

Yes. A person could be transformed into a Christian by Jesus by way of the Spirit having never read the Bible or been to church or heard the Gospel.

I think with such a view of God, you would be highly unlikely to be a Christian or any kind of Godly person. If you became a Christian withut the Bible, your ungodly attitude would go away and I have no doubt that Jesus would lead you to the Bible.

Herein lies your problem. You think you can choose to follow whatever you wish but Jesus never gives you that option. If you want eternal life, you have to follow Him and there is no doubt that Jesus holds the Bible in high regard.

That is NOT my view of God... It's the Bibles... Which is hilarious that you say its ungodly... Such an arrogant and ignorant answer deserves no response... You have no doubt shown what is wrong with Christianity today.

Well let me say it another way. If Christians where around before Jesus than the name was stolen from them and given new meaning. Because, the Christian belief of today starts with "Jesus Christ" and ends in death!

Now you are merely chasing your own tail.

The Bible did not come about until long after Jesus was dead, resurrected and gone.
But then, we are not talking about whether there were Christians before Jesus, now were we?
Nope.
We were talking about Christians existing before the BIBLE.
