A single person living alone in my area must spent over $500.00 a month on a place to live, heat and electricity. No food, car or anything else. Some other areas will cost $1000.00 (or much more) per month for a place, heat and electricity and no computer or TV or anything else.

I am in Maine USA where living is more than 500 and I was from Massachusetts where living is more than 1000

My sister lives with me and is looking for a place to live alone. Her job pays $8.50 an hour Monday - Friday and $9.00 an hour Saturday and Sunday. She works 35 hours a week including Saturday and Sunday. (The law says a person working in the state of Maine must be paid at least $7.50 per hour.)

I get by on £100 a month (US$154) from my parents, but that is with free accomodation, internet, car costs etc. About £80 covers most of the food bill (mainly so I can learn to cook and budget) and I can get a book or two as a luxury so this is VERY basic and wouldn't work in any other situation. plus I'm in a rural area which is pretty poor so food is a little bit cheaper as well. I don't have any other income (as I have depression so don't feel able to work/not entitled to benifits and wouldn't want the hassle anyway), so I don't pay taxes.

but how is possible that i can live like a king in Algeria for month,by 52945 Dinnars which equal to 500 dollars !!!

exchange rates (Algerian Donars to US Dollars) don't reflect the purchasing power parity in each country. There is something called the Big Mac Index, which is a kind of jokey attempt to establish what you can buy in each country based on the price of a Big Mac from McDonalds given it's a standardised global brand and product.

Do you have a car?
Do you pay for your internet access?
Do you pay for water?
Do you pay to heat your home?
Do you pay health insurance?
Do you pay anything for the home you live in?
Do you grow and make your own food?
Do you buy the food you eat or does someone else?
Do you pay for phone and television?
Do you eat eggs and how much do they cost? Here a dozen cost approximately $3.00.
Do you drink milk and how much does that cost? Here a gallon costs approximately $4.00
Do you buy a loaf of bread? Here it cost approximately $3.00 Good local bakery bread cost $6.00.

Yeah. I do save alot of money. In theory I could go ever cheaper, but the qualitity of the food (such as pasta and rice) gets too low. So I buy mid range rice and pasta which are of better qualitity. Often the most expensive purchase in a week in Meat or Fish. If I bought Chicken Breast it costs £4, but I buy much cheaper cuts of chicken such as drumsticks for about £1.80 which are often on sale. There is a bit of extra preperation time, but its adds up to a substancial saving (on my budget at least). I get 3 or 4 tins of tuna a week and the price is about half what it would be in one store in another.

At first it was quite a struggle, but after learning how to be more flexible, I eat remarkably well on a limited budget even if it isn't as varied as I'd like it to be.

(he says after having Tuna and cous cous a third time in the same week...)

No. I do not pay that. My sister is looking for a place to live and the best price is 500 but that does not pay to heat it which cost a lot here in Maine where the cold is for more than six months.

Do not add 1000 and 500. 1000 and 500 are for different places. If you want to live in New York city alone you need a million dollars.

We pay $150.00 every month for TV, internet, and home phone (a "land line" and I do not have a cell phone).
We pay heat, electricity (this is about $100.00 per month), and insurance.
We also pay insurance, excise and gas for the cars.
No eating yet!

To dye the hair cost $100.00 so my hair is grey.

Nope, 500 usd is not enough to cover the cost of rent and food. The standards of living are higher here than in Algeria. The services available are also above that of what is provided in Algeria. There are a lot of variables which drive these costs. Most Algerians couldn't afford to live in Vancouver as it would costs around 400,000 Dinars a month. Wages here are adjusted to account for the national cost of living. For example the average wage in Canada is 9 times higher than the average Algeria in USD

Hmm, well if you're talking about £500 or 500$ translated to pounds (cause that's even less)?

Either way, I think it would be very difficult, perhaps impossible, unless sharing the home with someone else. The rent or house alone would cost that amount per month. I'm not aware of rent cheap enough and then there's the cost of food, electricity (and/or gas) and then there's some other bills like telephone. I don't think it's enough here in this country. But you have to think, the wages are higher.

To give you a perspective, I had close to the minimum salary (I don't remember my exact salary) when I briefly worked, full time job of about 38 hours per week and made over £1200 in a month. My husband makes over £2000 per month (I don't know how much exactly) and we live quite comfortably. We're by no means "rich" but we can afford to go on vacation 1 or 2 times per year, we eat well and all the bills are always paid on time. We don't spend excessively, I think but we don't count pennies either.

So if working, you make well over £500 per month which should be ok to live on, if one is careful.

Well in AUD that's roughly 700 dollars. I suppose I could live off that a month, yes. Depending on where I rent and what utilities I pay for. Might not be in luxury but I could probably make ends meat, so to speak.
But I earn roughly 500 bucks (roughly 350 US) per week and I'm only on an entry level job so hopefully I won't be so desperate all my life lol

A few years ago I went through a stretch of "under-employment" where I was only making about $1000 a month. That was tight. I don't see how I could have lived on half that. It might be possible in some parts of Canada, but not where I live.

But if two or three people got together, each bringing $500 a month, that could be doable.

I live in DC, which is one of the most expensive cities in the country, but there is not a sliver of a chance that I could survive with $500 a month.
