500$ are at the moment 444,52€. That would never ever work.

- ~200€ a month for food
- then the insurance for two cars, ~230€ and ~140€
- then the petrol for the two cars: Car 1 ~190€ and Car 2 ~225€

Still no electricity, water, gas for heating, income taxes or stuff one does for fun like going to an amusement park or dancing.

So uhm no it's not possible for me.

Austin TX, 500$ could pay rent for one month, and I have two roommates. When I was living alone, 500$ wouldn't even cover rent. So, basically no, I don't think I could live on $500. I'm sure I could find a way to survive on $0 a month, but it wouldn't be pretty.

Easily. If I were to live by the return of my investments, it will be a little less than 500 dollars/month, but that will be sufficient for my wife and myself. I have my own apartment which is not being used. Giving out the apartment on rent can give me additional 500 dollars/month. However, since we have joint families and my son earns more than 100,000 dollars a year, I do not have to worry. Most people in India earn less that 500 dollars a month.

* If I sell my apartment, I will get something like 130,000 dollars. Add that to the investments and we get an amount with which we can live regally, not in Delhi, but in some other outlying place.

Hmm, well if you're talking about £500 or 500$ translated to pounds (cause that's even less)?

Either way, I think it would be very difficult, perhaps impossible, unless sharing the home with someone else. The rent or house alone would cost that amount per month. I'm not aware of rent cheap enough and then there's the cost of food, electricity (and/or gas) and then there's some other bills like telephone. I don't think it's enough here in this country. But you have to think, the wages are higher.

To give you a perspective, I had close to the minimum salary (I don't remember my exact salary) when I briefly worked, full time job of about 38 hours per week and made over £1200 in a month. My husband makes over £2000 per month (I don't know how much exactly) and we live quite comfortably. We're by no means "rich" but we can afford to go on vacation 1 or 2 times per year, we eat well and all the bills are always paid on time. We don't spend excessively, I think but we don't count pennies either.

So if working, you make well over £500 per month which should be ok to live on, if one is careful.

I am curious why 1200+2000 pound make you live normal (not rich) in UK , but if you convert the same value money from Pound to Dinars it's almost 3200 pound = 521925 dinars , it's make you live as king in Algeria .

if my salary is 521925 dinars.

you know what.

i will buy what every i want villas or cars , or even goes where every you want by plane .Dubia,Paris,NY,Hawie...etc
i will plan to buy a privet plane and buy NASA too :D

I think 500 is what YOU spend. Am I right? What does everyone in your family spend for everything? 500?
If you do not need to pay for your house, heat, internet and phone then 500 is good enough I think.

We have that too. My sister applies for it in Maine. The apartments which are government subsidized cost 30% of an eligible person's income.

Cost of living varies from nation to nation for a number of reasons. For example food costs will vary due to costs of growing, seeds, processing, etc. The global economy has not standardized costs across the globe. Think about this hypothetical. If water was a resource which needed to be imported to Algeria then it would cost a lot of money compared to using national water sources. Some nations have populations which exceed the capability of the land and farmers to produce. Thus food must be imported from another nation. The costs of production, exporting and importing costs will drive the cost up for the consumer. Also keep in mind that those that produce the food has a cost relative to the standards in their nation. So if it costs say 3 USD to produce 12 eggs then no one will sell these eggs to a nation in which it only costs 2 usd. Egg producers would go out of business.

Do you live on a single income? As in your are the only one provide an income to the household. What benefits do you receive from the government at no cost or covered by your taxes? You could have access to services at low or no cost while other nations do not provide this. Think of national health care programs, Canada or the UK versus insurance, USA.

Good prices for some stuff. It's unfortunate that Algeria's political system has been not the best semi-authoritarian thing going, but looks like things are getting better?

Property tax is the money a homeowner pays to the town or city where the home is.
Tavistock Borough in New Jersey has the highest average property tax in the state of New Jersey and New Jersey has the highest property tax rate in the USA.
The average home in Tavistock Borough, New Jersey costs $25,346 in taxes a year according to USA Today http://www.usatoday.com/story/money.../21/cheat-sheet-high-property-taxes/24990145/
25,346 divided by 12 months is $2112.17 a month. That is the average home there. That means some people might be paying $4000.00 a month in taxes.

If you get really lucky, that would be just enough to cover rent for a month, and not enough left over for utilities, food, insurances, or any other bills. Generally speaking, you should plan on spending at least about $600 a month on rent. Here, you would need about 106,048.02 Dinar, or $1,000 a month, to just eek out a modest living and scrape together a bit to save, and that is with just one person.

i guess our political system now is focus on avoid "Arabic Spring" , focus on stability more than democraty of guns .cause we suffered from period of war against terrorism since 1992 to 2002 .

Yes it's going to better , then 90" cause of stability and wise leadership .

That is Doug and my situation.
We live in a very modest one bedroom house. It is paid for, but the taxes are nearly $100./month That is because we are financing the education of all the kids in the county.
To rent a comparable house would cost at least $500/month. No utilities or anything included. And if this house were a rental the taxes would go up by over double, because then it is a commercial property.

Comparing costs in different countries doesn't get you much information.
If you had kids would the government guarantee access to education or would you have to pay or the kids do without it?
