Can you outsmart your foot?

1. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand.

Ack! My foot keeps wanting to switch directions!

Yes!! I feel victorious, I got it! Here's another challenge: try to draw a square in the air with one hand at the same time as drawing a triangle with the other hand. Tricky tricky!

Oops, I meant three squares in one hand, and four triangles in the other (that way you have twelve motions in both hands and should end up in the same point that you started). If that makes sense.

I have a lot of mucsican friends here in austin and they call being able to do stuff like that being poly rhymthic. They mostly say its important for drummers and they have in their sub-culture, drills and practices to develop that idea but some of them seem to think it is innate to a large degree. I found the concept really interesting when I was in college because at the time I was working out in martial arts with these escrima guys who were using their right hand to teach their left hand vectors and motions while using a short stick in each hand in an anti -poly rhymthic fashion. The body seems to learn from rhythm and it would be cool if anyone had insight on a-rhymthic motions.

I could do this one too. I had to concentrate a little, but I did it. :jiggy:

Please....I can't even walk across a room and dial a phone without running into a wall. This would qualify as a mensa test for me.

Not to psycho analyize you Mel but your head is all over the place on these forums at times. I am guessing if you are on the phone and walking across the room you are also trying to think of what you have to do for tomarrow, remember who you are suppose to call later that night and looking at the mail while dialing. Just a guess. I could be wrong but your head seems kinda busy a lot.

More like reading your posts I guess there is more to a post than just text....at least for me there is. I am always trying to find patterns and contexts.

well peg me back than.....i won't mind. on a place like this everybody kinda wears their personality and traits on there sleeves..there is so much info traded in a place like this everyday that sometimes i can't keep it all in my head. i bet if you try to consciously find patterns you will be like about others too......kinda like having a penpal...that you never met......some i feel more familiar with than people i see everyday cause harder to hide your inner self in print without outright lying.....

Whats wrong with being a drummer???? Yes you guessed it. I am a drummer. And yeah we do stuff like that. Its hard to play 5/8ths on the toms and 4/8ths on the high hat while hitting the back beats on the bass and working your way around a line. It takes ALOT of practice.
