Canadian Indigenous group says more graves found at new site

A Canadian Indigenous group said Wednesday a search using ground-penetrating radar has found 182 human remains in unmarked graves at a site near a former Catholic Church-run residential school that housed Indigenous children taken from their families.

The latest discovery of graves near Cranbrook, British Columbia follows reports of similar findings at two other such church-run schools, one of more than 600 unmarked graves and another of 215 bodies. Cranbrook is 524 miles (843 kilometers) east of Vancouver.

The Lower Kootenay Band said in a news release that it began using the technology last year to search the site close to the former St. Eugene’s Mission School, which was operated by the Catholic Church from 1912 until the early 1970s. It said the search found the remains in unmarked graves, some about 3 feet (a meter) deep.

It’s believed the remains are those of people from the bands of the Ktunaxa nation, which includes the Lower Kootenay Band, and other neighboring First Nation communities.

Chief Jason Louie of the Lower Kootenay Band called the discovery “deeply personal” since he had relatives attend the school.

“Let’s call this for what it is,” Louie told CBC radio in an interview. “It’s a mass murder of Indigenous people.”

“The Nazis were held accountable for their war crimes. I see no difference in locating the priests and nuns and the brothers who are responsible for this mass murder to be held accountable for their part in this attempt of genocide of an Indigenous people.”

Seems to me that they need to get a list of all the "schools" in question and check them all for dead bodies...

If it is what it looks like this is a heinous crime and it should not be forgotten, I think. Those were living people, friends and family. Hope they are given some kind of remembrance and justice.

That would be all the schools ever run as residential schools. It's a red tape nightmare I'm sure.

So be it. This seems to have been a systemic crime against humanity and genocide. It deserves a thorough investigation because finds like this probably aren't limited to just the places they've found.

It's actually being done. Those recent digs are the result of a bunch of archeological dig permits authorized following a commission's report on those schools. If you are Canadian, you will hear news like this all summer long. There are at least three more in the woodworks at the moment and more tribes are requesting permits to investigate the schools that robbed them of their children.

You're absolutely right. Some ran from the late 1800s until 1970 or so. That is a lot of people. There were 2 large ones in a suburb of the city I live in. Needless to say the churches and government have been less than co-operative. I figure it will hit 50 000 graves before this is over. And that doesn't mean it's over.

I do find this to be a bit disturbing:

Important Notice: Further to an Order of the Supreme Court of British Columbia dated July 27, 2015, no further requests to add an institution to the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement are permitted. Click on the links below to find the list of recognized residential schools and hostels. Please click here to view the decisions for institutions that have been requested to be added to the list of Indian residential schools recognized by the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
Hundreds more to boot.

This is looking like several masssive massacres of epic proportions instuted by the Catholic Church.

How many more are there I wonder? And not just in Canada, look everywhere now.

There needs to be an investigation and disclosure as to what the hell the Catholic church did to people.

The Catholic Church is looking far worse each year not as humanitarian and saintly, but as an apex institution of churning out death and unspeakable horrors.

Now that people now know where to look....

I suspect you replied before my edit where I added a list of churches and a link to the source
Were there discovered mass graves of hundreds of dead children buried on each of the properties by other churches other than the catholics?

Yes, I think that's something that must be done -- as horrendously expensive (and heart-rending) as it will be.

No person living today can atone for the horrible things done by people now long dead and gone. But as a nation, we have to recognize what happened, and own up to it -- and make a serious and determined effort to make sure that such things can never happen again.
