Why do people say that taking cannabis is a sin? According to the bible, God gave Adam every seed of every plant (below). Was cannabis sativa not one of those?

The NKJV Bible said:
"Then God said, 'Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth'; and it was so" - Genesis 1:11

"And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good." - Genesis 1:12

"And God said, 'See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food." - Genesis 1:29

What about poisonous plants? Since committing suicide is a sin, knowingly eating of a poisonous plant would constitue the same, no?

That said, I think more of this is based on societal pressure than on doctrine.

Because people don't base their criteria for sin on their religious texts, but rather on the accepted social behaviors of whatever environment they were raised in. Defining these "sins" as originating from a religious document is merely a rationalization after the fact.

It is very natural for things which fall outside our experience to make one feel uncomfortable, which is then easily extended to concluding that those things are "wrong", especially when that conclusion is agreed upon, and communicated, by the majority of those in your community or social network.

In my view, because it's addictive it's banned; anything which is addictive should generally be avoided. That is also why I avoid alcohol and tobacco. :D

Other religions use canabis spiritually, such as Gnostics and Rastafari, and also the Hindus and Sikhs consume "bhang", which contains bits from the female cannabis plant; it's either drunk or smoken.

Interestingly, there are some verses in the Bible that imply Cannabis; 30:23 uses the word "kaneh bosm" (קְנֵה-בֹשֶׂם) - which is translated either "calamus" or "cannabis" depending. The modern Hebrew for "cannabis" is "קנאביס" (kanabis). The word kaneh bosm means "fragrant cane", so, it's a tricky one!

Personally I'm going to go for calamus, simply because I can't stand the smell of cannabis as well as its addictive properties, it's not something I'd like (I watched a friend's life go to hell during his time as habitual cannabis smoker, he even went into fraud to feed his habit, and cannabis isn't even that expensive..!) I may be wrong, but shush. I'm happy in my ignorance. :yes:

Just kidding. :D This is a topic that is very open to debate, and it can get pretty heated!

No doubt - food, exercise, video games, praying, reading, and the internet should all be banned, or at least avoided at all costs.

This graph is pharmacologically incorrect, flargantly so unless the authors heavily weight cultural factors in their assessments.
