AN internet casino has paid £5500 for a pretzel said to be shaped like the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus.

Golden Palace Casino swooped in about 30 seconds before bidding closed last night on the internet auction site eBay.

The casino previously bought a partially eaten grilled cheese sandwich said to resemble Mary.

The pretzel drew 56 bids. The sellers’ 12-year-old daughter said she discovered the Rold Gold honey-mustard-flavoured pretzel while snacking and watching television with her family on February 27.

"I just thought it was a weird-shaped pretzel," said Crysta Naylor, of St Paul, Minnesota. "At first I thought it was an ‘S.’ I showed it to my mom, and she told me it looked like Mary and the baby Jesus. I looked at it again, and I could see it really did look like that."

Maybe it's me, but doesn't this show the casino to have more money than sense?

There is a part of our brain (I couldn't tell you where) which has the sole purpose of recognising patterns - ie facial patterns. The purpose being to facilitate the recognition of individuals; this also explain why, when looking at a cloudy sky, anything, in fact, we can often deceive ourselves into 'seeing' a face.
