Cat Spraying

sunsplash

Freckled
We have two cats, both females, one is almost 4, the other is 3.

The 3 year old started spraying about a year ago, lining certain walls, the sides of furniture, etc. We're going to get her spayed in a month but I'm worried this won't correct the problem. There have been no changes in the environment to set her off and she's perfectly healthy - and she only does it at certain times of the month. Will the spaying help or is this a behavioral issue that we'll have to deal with as long as we have her? Are there any deterants we can use? I've tried vingar which works great for removing the smell but doesn't stop her from spraying the spot later on.

I wish I could be more helpful, but the general rule is that spaying will prevent it if it's done before they start. If they've already started, you may have a problem on your hands. We use vinegar too if any of the pets "make a mistake" anywhere, which seems to work. What about that bitter apple spray? They apparently hate that smell. Maybe that might keep her away from whatever objects she tends to target?

Depends Upon My Mood..
Umm...Im not trying to depress you but probably you are screwed..The only thing I can think is maybe changing the whole surface of the flooring and who knows..

Make sure they have each a seperate litter box..and its quiet and peaceful where they need to pee..and keep the litter boxes clean..

Other than that? Cats are just as much pissers as litlle dogs..

Something has gone awry..()they are fincky)

yeah...one of our cats is just plain not toilet trained, but she's old...

Spraying is generally a territory thing

you are righ5t gettting them spayed may not help the issue

best bet...honestly, ask at your local pet store, shelter and the vet. Ask the professionals!

We have spray stuff that is a natural enzyme, it works by breaking down the pee chemcials through the a natural enzyme..I guess like spraying strong acid or alkaline on something.

It really depends on the cat though....change the litter as much as you can. Our two cats are total opposites. Our 7lbs calico is a lady, thin, petite, always walks around like a paris hilton bulemic type.....yet she refuses to use the litter tray, we tried twotrays

but our big 20lbs maine coon, just went in both trays....he was actually a rescue cat...and spent a while living on the streets in a very nice neighborhood, was attacked by some animal and we got him from a shelter. Surpringly though, he's fully potty trained.....he's total opposite though, big, boystrous, messy eater, growls when he eats (hilarious).....

so really ask the professionals, so much depends on the actual cats...

my 2 cents

We're thinking of getting some stick on plastic vinyl or somethign for the floor in the one room that is the problem.... but more research is required!

cat pee is bad in that it has amonia in it I believe??? hence the gawd awful smell

Yep..its amonia..

If they find a spot..and they wont stop??

It will burn your nose hairs out..and and your eyes water..

Cat pee is quite possibly the worst smell ever. Though cough syrup is certainly a close competitor...

I'd recommend Nature's Miracle stain and odor remover for the stains. Uses alcohol and enzymes to break down the stain and it works very well. I try to maintain a good relationship with my cat and communicate to him much like I would a human and I think that helps quite a bit.
