Since he's seeking that party's nomination to run for prez, his claim of being an independent seems weak.

That is a recent development, more to do with the realities of national political campaigns.
Cynic that I am, I believe that the DNC let him in for two main reasons. He maintains the appearance of a campaign for the Dem nomination, without the electability to present an actual threat to her coronation. And he is so far left that she appears center right by comparison, which she is (despite efforts to paint her as a leftist).

Right and left are comparative terms, as far as I know she is not center-right in American politics and why in a discussion of American politics would we use any other understanding? To be fair, I have not looked at her policy plans, I am just assuming she is not far removed from the Democrat party plank.

Her present plans are to give everyone anything they want for free....That is until she has to meet her contender for the Presidency (that is if she isn't in court defending herself) then all promises are the same as "you can keep your doctor".

It's an effective strategy......
1) Discern desires.
2) Promise fulfillment.
3) Someone else will pay.
4) Predict cost savings.
Generally, only #1 is actually accomplished.

The last figures I read, which admittedly was around 2 or even 3 years ago, medical inflation had dropped from a bit over 9% down to around 1.5% per year. From 1998-2008 (11 years), our combined medical costs in this country literally doubled. No doubt that the recession had some effect on that, but the CBO also stated that the ACA also helped to bring it down. However, it's still way too high as we're spending 18% of GDP and yet we still don't have universal coverage, plus co-pays are still very high for so many people.

The point being is that there are at least some things our fed govt does right but no doubt it could do a lot better.

The ER usage is deceiving since we are seeing some more going there because they now have coverage whereas before many didn't go because of costs. Prior to this, ER's across the country were shutting down because too many people were coming in w/o insurance, meaning the hospitals had to then absorb the cost.

What we are missing here is an adequate triage system that is independent of the hospital, such as what they now have in Singapore. Except in obvious emergency cases, you go to triage first, then it is decided there if you need to go to the ER, just see a doctor, which type of doctor, or maybe just see a pharmacist.
