Are you implying that it is immoral for someone in charge of the health of the nation to make a profit over the pain and suffering of others? I thought that was okay since the last election. MAGA!
I implied nothing.
But I will clearly state that she showed unbelievably bad judgement.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
As she should. That's a huge conflict of interest...

Another Trump nominee bites the dust.
Don't see why.

Smoking or buying stock is not a disease itself. ;0)

I would say it's a given many cancer surgeons smoke themselves, much less have purchased tobacco stock for which cancer itself isn't attributed solely and exclusively to smoking and the use of tobacco products.

This is the Center for Disease Control, not a center for the elimination of tobacco companies.

She was blind to politics & public relations.

I imagine a financial planners job is to grow your investment, not normally worry about conflicts of interest. Though I'll grant she probably should have had more meetings with her financial planner.

So live and learn, if you're going to get into politics, make sure your financial planner has experience dealing with politicians.
Searching around the internet before I posted this thread,
I tried to find out the extent of her involvement in choosing
this stock. I couldn't find anything. But as you say, greater
care was still necessary, even in hiring someone to invest $.

Meh. If she didn’t explicitly choose tobacco companies in her portfolio, I don’t see how you could really fault her.

Given that in 2017 there were, in the U.S., approx. 68,000 oncologists and surgeons of all stripes, and given that the number of physicians who smoke has dropped to somewhere around 2%, I suspect that you are overestimating the number of smoking cancer specialists.

Not politicians, but dealing with the rules of ethics. This was poor decisions on her part. The Conflict of Interest rules can be very tricky. She should have known to disclose her financial holdings from the start and have her financial planner involved in it all.

They all do this, just not all of them get caught, lol.
This seems more boneheaded than most blunders.
It's guaranteed loss of job, but without any huge payoff.
Something like embezzling money would make more
sense, even though it's much more unethical.

I just think it's an ethical problem, I think most people buy stocks they believe in unless they're doing like funds that just track indexes - which I personally prefer. (Much less risk)

Anyway, this isn't the worst thing going on a lot of these guys are getting appointed to the boards in these companies after they leave the government position. This is basically bribery, it's just happening with a time delay. :D

But she would have to make decisions that will affect those tobacco companies, and the value of those shares.
Her decisions could have benefited herself. She was no longer a disinterested party.

The usual culprit used to be the EPA, people would sit on staffer positions at the EPA and then after their tenure they'd go work for oil companies and whatnot. If that's not a conflict of interest, nothing is. :D
