Its especially weird for me considering that there used to be conspiracies that CDC and WHO were part of manipulation to create a world government. Now its clear the CDC has to do what its told by the executive branch in the USA, its lost its veneer of independence. The people who work there have all lost a lot of reputation, too. Now nothing they do can be considered, ultimately, scientific. Its political from here on out, maybe forever.

This administration has been anti-science from both the president and vice-president. Considering that the US has been a leader in science it is terrifying to watch the president and vice president show such negative attitudes to the scientific community not just in the corona virus but in climate change also. Their actions are causing the world to lose respect for the US just for their own needs to the point that the president has claimed scientists really do not know what the are talking about. This is reminiscent of dictatorial governments and I never thought I would see this happen in the US.

It hasn't been and that's why they are where they are, TBH. It got into politics a long time ago, and it's repeatedly caved to the demands of whatever side of the aisle is in charge. CDC heads are appointed by the President, so it's obvious this is the true problem. If we lived in an ideal world I think we'd want it so our best and brightest in achievement were manning that post and it was something that was selected from within that body democratically. That's not how it is, and that's why we're here.

Unfortunately the potential for using science to secure control by a potential administration is as well, reminiscent of dictatorial governments. I as well, never thought I would see this happen in the US.

It won't be forever. People continue to listen to those scientists who have been outspoken throughout, even though it has cost them their jobs.

Can you discuss one instance in history wherein a dictator took control by citing actual scientific facts, rather than “alternative facts” and pseudo-science propaganda?
I don’t recall science ever rising to take power in any human civilization throughout history. Personally I believe that it would be a wondrous day indeed if it ever 1. came to pass, and 2. didn’t get corrupted by politics and religion.

Science largely depend on patronage, and those people that support narrow research for their Personal or corporate benefit.
It is impossible to separate science from those that finance it.
One of the main tools to ensure this is the patent system.
This ensures that discoveries can not be shared freely or as used by others as stepping stones to further progress.
Science can be defined by secrecy. And is held back by it.

All advances in science and engineering have led to greater over all employment opportunities.
It is the inflexibility and lack of skills that prevent people who are using previous technologies to advance with these changes.
Change is inevitable.
Education and training needs to be continuous throughout everyone's careers.

Businesses need to embrace new advances or they fail, and their workers become redundant.

Agree. The patent system appears to be failing, however. If I made something, I couldn't afford to get it patented. The patent system doesn't protect me but impedes me, and it helps someone else instead. Some people rather than patenting simply go into production to avoid that system. An example is the slingshot channel guy who's invention is well documented on youtube. So the patent system is again just another system of patronage.

Sorry I got off topic. Yes you are right that somebody has to fund things, however I'm glad that people are free to develop things without being funded. We can, if we choose, expend our own time doing research and don't need a license. We can, if we choose, check the validity of claims.

I think Hitler valued science. Truman also. Doctors and scientists were used. This has nothing to do with whether science speaks with one voice on all the issues that are of concern in the US and elsewhere. Hire an expert to say whatever you like. That is the scientific opinion.

Case in point. They don’t hire experts, they hire people willing to toss science/truth under the bus for money.

Some people said masks were not useful, others said they need to be compulsory...etc. Do we arrest the one expert you do not like and follow whatever the other one is paid to say?

Origin sciences are not neutral they are belief based and biased. Climate models of the far past are also belief based in many ways. Predictions the universe will go dark or etc etc are belief based. Science has lost the ability to claim neutrality. Science is like law in many ways, you hire a science guy to say what you like.
