There is a Celtic Voices CD which features Mary McLaughlin, Connie Dover, Maireid Sullivan and Emma Christian.

Capercaillie, The Pogues, Talitha Mackenzie, Van Morrison and many others from various collections of harpists, etc. I prefer the traditional music a bit more than the New Age interpretations except for some like Enya.

I strongly recommend Loreena even though her music is actually a compilation of world traditional rather than Irish/Celtic except for her earlier works.

I love capercaillie.

I've only heard them on a compliation CD - which I adorded, but can't remember the name of.

It had a bunch of different british folk groups on it - would you happen to know which one that would be?

I wouldn't know. I bet most of the international artists have there music scattered across soundtracks, narrada collections and such in the states. They are on a compilation "Celtic Voices" vol? with Altan, Loreena, Talitha and some others.

I started my interest in traditional music with "Celtic Voices-Women of Song". Picked up a demo copy for working overtime at MediaPlay 11 years ago and that was it.

above is a link to Seamus Ennis playing the uillean pipes. It's not for most people but will give you an idea of some traditional pipe music.

The Chieftains are the very best.

Also, The Clancy Brothers, Tommy Makem, Irish Rovers, Gallowglass Ceili Band and the Dubliners for the good old-fashioned Irish pub songs.

Clannad (enya's old band), Maire Brennan (another former Clannad singer) and David Arkenstone for the New Agey stuff (if you like Enya and McKennitt, you'll like these).

Kate Bush is excellent.

For Irish American, there's a band from the Portland area called "The Suffering Gaels," which is excellent.

But I can't recommend the Chieftains highly enough. I saw them in concert a few years ago. One of the best live performances I've ever seen.

I forgot some good ones. For instrumental folk, Skip Healy is awesome.

And for classic Irish-American pop music, you can't beat Dennis Day, Frank Patterson or the Irish Tenors.

I went through a celt-rock phase a few years ago. I love The Pogues and The Saw Doctors. I enjoy the Riverdance soundtrack. Saw that show in person as well, and it was really excellent.

I had a friend in grad school who was way into celtic music of all sorts. He introduced me to The Clancy Brothers and a group from Virginia (where he was from) call Fenian. A few others too I'm sure, but I don't remember them.

If you like Enya, have you tried Clannad? Enya was part of Clannad for a while, but broke away and did her own thing. Clannad is a family group, so they are Enya's close relatives.

I'm Irish. I love Enya, she's a genius: but that's about the limit for me. I can take some Irish folk music like the Dubliners and stuff like that, but I'm not really into it. Remember, my country also produced Daniel O' Donnell.

I guess I should be grateful I don't know who that is.
