certain human health problems (e.g. childhood cancer, birth defects, downs syndrome, etc)

Some people believe that certain human health problems (e.g. childhood cancer, birth defects, downs syndrome, etc) are caused by the parent's "sin." Or, "how could God exist if all this needless human suffering happens all the time?"
I have never understood these arguments. Humans sometimes suffer health problems (cancer, birth defects, etc) because lifeforms have imperfections. We have no evidence that shows God is causing these problems, with or without reasons (e.g. sins). Never forget, the Bible is an ancient book of mythology!

There is no correlation that I'm aware of between the existence or lack thereof of any gods and such health problems.

It's superstition. Even in pre-Abrahamic religions, birth defects or any misfortune could mean a god was angered. Like so many things, Christianity was influenced by earlier beliefs, often putting its own spin on and rebranding them; in this instance, folding it into their concept of sin. To be fair, ancient peoples had far less to go on in regards to understanding how things worked and when you feel so much of the world and life is beyond your control and understanding, it's not hard to see how things were attributable to some greater force. But for someone today to assume a birth defect or an illness "must be" a sign a god is displeased with someone, well... smh

Hehe! Have you heard of a nice building in Rome, called Coloseum?
You must not be familiar with the nature of religion. I was married to a Christian for several years, religion was very ingrained, hypnotic and addictive for me. For a while after I quit, I was just "non-religious." Okay? I am a 63-year-old agnostic theist & freethinker who is in the process of deconstructing from Christianity.

Very true. I'm a former Christian. It takes a while deconstructing does.

I'd rather not emulate the Romans, or the Christians, or the Aztecs. None of them meet my minimum moral standards.
I'd emulate Coloseum with the christian lions theme. Like Disneyland.

The issue has nothing to do with whether or not God caused these problems. The argument is about a being that has the ability to solve these problems but chooses not to.

It is also an ancient book of anthropology. The Bible authors clearly didn't have the same values as we have today. E.g. individualism seems a foreign concept to them. What counts is the family, the lineage. YHVH punishes people by killing or persecuting their children. Our modern concept of individualism thinks that is unfair as the children are individuals who don't deserve to die for the sins of their fathers. In biblical times that seems to be a normal concept as it happens so often.

And the answer to that could be, people wanted to know evil, and therefore were expelled to this first death, which is like the virtual reality in Matrix, where we can learn all kind of things, without soul being destroyed. This is a one big lesson, and those who learn well, and become righteous, can then enter back to life with God, without anything evil.

And these shall go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into everlasting life.
Matt. 25:46
