China spying on us through domestic appliances!

All those microchips we use in our electronic devices and household appliances that are made in China......

Well, the Chinese have made them so that they can use them to spy on us!

Here is an article:

China could be spying on us through domestic appliances such as the fridge, report warns | Daily Mail Online

The West needs to wake up and realise that China is a hostile power

We should make our own microchips and our own devices and appliances

But that's not going to happen because China can make them much cheaper and nobody in the West wants to pay more, even if doing so means things being more secure

The daily mail is also banned by Wikipedia as an unreliable source.

Personally i reckon the is article is right wing scare tactic. Yes it is possible to build back doors into chips. And yes china does make many internet enabled chips. But just consider, the number of such chips made, it would take the whole of the population of china to monitor them. China produces about 1/4 of all semiconductors

I wonder why the mail isn't shooting at Taiwan, South Korea? Until recently the US was the world leading semiconductor manufacturer, and still is the biggest designer of semiconductors.

Western powers have long prioritized profit and resource exploitation over ethical, humanitarian, and sometimes even political concerns. Look at the United States' decades-long relationship with the House of Saud and its turning a blind eye to their tyranny and theocracy, or France's and the UK's storied history of exploiting and violently intervening in African countries.

The same brand of morally unfettered capitalism and exploitation that those powers have advanced and employed for decades is now proving to be a thorn in their side with regard to their competition with China. Since China offers cheaper labor and has a vast market that large corporations simply can't ignore, they now wield this sort of power and have a major ace in the hole over Western rivals. Even if the article in the OP is completely fake, the fact remains that China's influence and power are impossible for its rivals to fully avoid at this point.

Western powers now have to consider the possibility of lying in the bed they have made for themselves, and it's one ugly bed considering the CCP's atrocious policies.

This is quite misleading.
You (and daily mail) make it sound as if any device that has chips and was made in china is a spy tool.
This is brutally incorrect.

My vaccuum cleaner has chips made in china also. They can't be used to spy.

It's not just chips. It's primarily software in so-called "smart devices" that connect to the internet and which can be controlled by other software running on other devices. The "internet of things" stuff.
And even then, it really depends on what we are talking about.

For example, "smart lights" idd use a chip and you can switch them on and off with a mobile app over a wireless network connection. But there's no sensors there to record audio. There's no camera attached. There's no digging into your contact lists. There literally is nothing going on in terms of data collection.

If you worry about being spied on... I'ld worry more about any and all "social" media and apps that for no particular reason ask you for permission to access your location services, your contacts, your pictures, your media files, etc.

When you have an app that asks for all that while none of it is required for the functionality of the app... be a smart boy and delete said app.

The DM is trash but I still read it because they have an accessible website that is updated frequently

I call it The Daily Fascist

Partly because of this editorial, written at some point in the 1930s:

I'm thinking it might be worth a little more investment in your sources, than just going for the most accessible one frequently updated.

Here is one which is better quality, and with more variety of views...it's free, and updated regularly, and has various portals based on location. I've linked to the US one below;

The Conversation: In-depth analysis, research, news and ideas from leading academics and researchers.

If China was spying on me through my fridge, my household would have reached celebrity status by now.

"Pipsqueak toddler with sailor mouth opens fridge requesting grand things that obviously aren't there, and each time the door opens, the scene is flooded with ten hungry cats."

(One cat has his special diet food kept in the fridge, and the rest all know it.)

Good. Just place Alexia next to it and have it drive each other crazy until both implodes from data overload.
