Here are some criteria from Scripture:
We must take care of the least of our brethren. Matthew 25:
31 “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy[
c] angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides
his sheep from the goats. 33 And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36 I
was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed
You, or thirsty and give
You drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take
You in, or naked and clothe
You? 39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did
it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did
it to Me.’
41 “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; 43 I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’
44 “Then they also will answer Him,[
d] saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ 45 Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do
it to one of the least of these, you did not do
it to Me.’ 46 And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
We must endure until the end. Matthew 10:
21 “Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father
his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. 22 And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.
We must live out the Beatitudes. Matthew 5:
“Blessed
are the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed
are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed
are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed
are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.
7 Blessed
are the merciful,
For they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed
are the pure in heart,
For they shall see God.
9 Blessed
are the peacemakers,
For they shall be called sons of God.
10 Blessed
are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great
is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
We must love God and others. 1 John 4:
12 No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son
as Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.
17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 19 We love Him[
b] because He first loved us.
We must endure under temptation. James 1:12
Blessed
is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the
crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
We must be faithful unto death. Revelation 2:10
Do not fear any
of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw
some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the
crown of life.
We must abide in Christ. John 15:
5 “I am the vine, you
are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw
them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will[
b] ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.
We must know Jesus. Matthew 7:
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
We must be baptized. John 3:
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
We must eat and drink Jesus' Body and Blood, which is the Eucharist. John 6:
53 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For My flesh is food indeed,[
h] and My blood is drink indeed. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.
