Christian crosses on gangbangers - what's it about?

what is it with the fashion for wearing crucifix pendants?

this seems to be a common trend amongst young male macho badboys

where on earth did this idea come from and how is it supposed to be considered cool?

Honour, respect, family perhaps - but why the silver crucifix?

The crucufix is from Roman Catholicism, so, logically, these people most likely come from that religious background.

wouldn't the activities of your general gang member or street hood tend to go against the teachings of the church though?

^ Yes, it is strange, i'ts like the people using those Christian symbols are basically attaching no meaning to them. I don't know if that is more of a cultural thing or even perhaps it's just a fashion statement.

It's most likely this.
I've seen people who profess to be strong atheists, and even anti-theists wearing crosses. Why, I have no idea. I'm guessing it's fashionable.

perhaps a fashion statement of irony - like a rejection of the establishment.

Has anyone seen The Shield? - a gang of Latinos in that had crown-of-thorns tattoos, that looked very cool I must admit!

The Shield is a tv series - a cop show.

anyway, the tattoos were on the mens bald heads - looked good.

Pardon me (or maybe you shouldn't) for being extremely judgmental for a sec, but I'm betting the young gentlemen that wear crosses have no idea what the religion's philosophy is, and only see it as a symbol for the excuses they use to sleep at night.

I thought about this a lot... I worked at a drug store in the ghetto. Lots of people with huge crosses adorned with jewels and stuff. Like a symbol for their pride, ironically. Or the only sense of structure they have. But, I guess, where else are you supposed to find your comfort, in such a neighborhood =[

I live in an urban, poor area. A ghetto, I suppose.

Many take their comfort in intoxicants, illegal drugs, their cars, some routine, boring programme on TV (like Eastenders), getting involved with gangs, or football (soccer). I don't see many religious people at all, but maybe that's because I'm in Britain.

I'm not sure what reasons they have for wearing the cross. However, it doesn't surprise me. The cross is not a "Christian" symbol anyway. The Encyclopaedia Britannica (1946) vol. 6, p753 states: "The use of the cross as a religious symbol in pre-Christian times and among non-Christian peoples may probably be regarded as almost universal" noting also it was connected with nature worship. Some view it as a phallic symbol.

Sorry, are we talking about gangsters or priests now? ;)

In my opinion, many priests (including pedophile priests and those who protect them) are gangsters. While many priests may be sincere, many priests bear heavy guilt for their conduct past and present, including bloodguilt for the wars and genocides committed with their complicity and often active participation.

I don't think the people weaaring the crosses here are religious, though, then again, I could be wrong.....I don't know anyone like that so I've never asked them, actually...

Is it likely that a percentage of them attend church? Definitely, but I couldn't guess a figure.

I asked about this once. I was told that it's because of a superstition originating in Mexico that if you stab or shoot someone through a rosary, you'll be cursed by God for the rest of your life.

I didn't ask if He approved of sacrilege-free murder and violence....

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
Well, I mean come on. Look at this idiot:

Some people simply have no tact - and certainly don't seem to see the irony of their behavior.

Who is it though?
What's the context?
It's obviously some kind of a show.
Is it a statement of some kind?
A comedy?
Some kind of 'living art' performance?
An appeal to christians for money?
(which actually would equate to a comedy. :D)
