Christian extremists want Bill Maher punished for blasphemy

I find Bill Maher to be rude, insensitive, and often sexist, racist, and hateful. I also find Bill Maher to be hilarious, insightful, self-effacing, and at times, even charming. Which should we hang him for?

A thought came into my head: It's much easier to judge others than it is judge ourselves. So I say, don't worry about Bill Maher, don't worry about religious extremists and worry about yourself. ;) And now, I will practice what I preach (so to speak) and vamoose from this thread.

So in order to avoid judgement we are not to speak out when a fellow Christian acts or speaks in a heinous manner? I don't buy that.

I meant not judging ANYONE at all. I am a Christian. I can criticize the fanatics and I can criticize Bill Maher. But neither one of them is affecting me at all so whining about either one is rather fruitless. I was ashamed I even responded in the first place. It's MY problem and no one else's. :)

Neither. All people are the same (in this one case): Sometimes they do nice things, sometimes they do not so nice things, and sometimes they just hang out.

I just think it is RIGHT to be out against what is WRONG.

I would like to expand a bit on my last post. Bill Maher's sole entertainment purpose, ever since "Politically Incorrect" was to say things that would get a negative reaction out of people. The fact is, people never let him down. He gets the reaction he expects from certain individuals.
I don't care what he thinks of my faith and other people of my faith shouldn't care, either. Edited to add: I realized I forgot to say that I don't like it when people say things just to get a negative reaction, I believe it to be childish, that's why I believe Mr. Maher was wrong.

That is why I believe they are both wrong.

But liberals are too mean to fundamentalist Christians! Let's not forget how much those poor groups are victimized by criticism of their beliefs!

I like how statements that come from many fundamentalists themselves are often more effective in showing the ridiculouness of their beliefs than anything a liberal can say. Those statements actually save a lot of time and effort.

Well, George Carlin expressed the same sentiments, except I think he did it more eloquently and with more humor.

I think Maher is the liberal atheist equivalent of Ann Coulter's neo-conservative Christian stance. Perhaps Coulter would be better received if she actually decided to present herself as a comedian instead of an attorney and political activist. Both make me laugh a lot. And when Coulter is on Maher's show, it's like two barn cats scratching and clawing at each other.

I dunno. Maher's making money and has a consistent audience. He's done a brilliant job at marketing a niche political roundtable forum on a cable network. People love him or hate him, which is exactly what it takes to be remembered and noticed. Look at Miley Cyrus and Sarah Palin. They're all laughing on their way to the bank.

I love Bill Maher whenever he speaks on non-religious subjects. I'm totally with him. But I do wince at some of his remarks about religion. But he has a right to speak his mind and he's not advocating punishing religious people for speaking out about what they believe to be true. That's the difference.

Clearly these geniuses don't appreciate the fact that that the US Constitution--the last I heard--states specifically "There shall be no ex post facto law," which means all this jabber about passing a law to sanction Mahler for something he did in the past is PURE NONSENSE!!

Just the facts.

I'm all for freedom of speech. I only meant that I choose not to watch that sort of thing. I'm not the sort of person who would want to ban someone just because they said something that I thought was wrong. :)

The thing is, if you say things like he did, people are going to react to it. Granted, they were out of line, but it isn't totally surprising, either.
