Christians: Is contraception a moral good?

YeshuaRedeemed

Revelation 3:10
I will honor all views presented, but I would like to explain why I say yes. 1. Contraception prevents abortion. If a woman is not pregnant, she can't have an actual abortion. 2. Contraception allows women to choose whether to have a baby prior to conception. 3. Contraception can make a tokophic woman feel safe. Tokophobia is an extreme fear of pregnancy and childbirth. I had my tubes removed for this reason. 4. Contraception allows women to space their children. 5. Combined hormonal contraception can treat medical problems. Addition note, contraception does not cause abortion.

Of course it is a moral good.

The traditional opposition to it from the Catholic church (which I belong to, loosely) is an absurdity, derived from the very doubtful and - so far as I can tell - unbiblical concept of "Natural Law". Control of fertility is one of the biggest advances in society in the last century and has untold benefits, for individuals (especially women), for societies and ultimately for human civilisation and the planet. The position of the church will change, but it will probably take a couple of centuries of edging towards a new teaching. No Catholic I know takes the current position seriously. It is one of those issues that makes me hope that one day women will be admitted as priests. Once they are, this will change in short order.

It is fine within marriage.

Sexual relations should only be had between a man and woman who are legally and lawfully wedded.

Well...according to Jesus and St. Paul, it would be best for us to be celibate ascetics. That's obvious from Paul, but I get that feeling from Christ, too. Marriage is granted for those who can't handle celibacy. Buddhism has similar views.

So the ideal is ascetic celibacy, then marriage is a tier down and I suppose non-fertile marriage relations would be a tier down from that. So you could say that contraption is a better alternative than something worse. I think God works with us where we are.

Its a moral decision sometimes but not always.

It depends upon several factors. Sometimes you should use contraception but sometimes you have a duty not to. Suppose you are a peaceful person surrounded by death cults. Sounds funny, I know, but this is a reality in our world. I am not talking about a post apocalyptic science flick but about real world cultures that we have seen with our own eyes and that recur throughout History. Some cultures believe in war and in violence, and they spread their political and religious ideologies. Some believe in madness and have insanity ingrained in them. You then may feel a moral compulsion to counter the death cults by reproducing more quickly. The normal human response is to fear having children. People tend to say things like "I just don't want to bring children into a world like this one!" when that is the opposite of what peaceful intelligent people should be saying. In these conditions its time to say "I am going to raise my children to be a light in a dark world."
