Christians: Kill family who mentions other beliefs to you?

Mighty strange, then, how Christians -- not you of course -- keep throwing them at us.

The only OT passages that still count are the ones that contradict evolution and condemn homosexuals. You know, the good passages.

If God commands it, it is not murder ;)

That is a horrible view on murder.

Is this the "morality" that the Church teaches? That it is OK to kill others because your imaginary friend said it was OK?

And they say atheist are lacking in morals, but at least I know murder is wrong.

Just as I start to once again grow respectful of the Church. I hear something like "If God commands it, it is not murder" and once again I lose respect for the Church. It makes me think that despite all the good of the Church, we might just be better off without it.

Well if this aint some mighty fine jibber jabber

"If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul

everyone who thinks like me

entice thee secretly, saying

and thinks to himself

Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth

maybe those pagens ive heard about need my prayers, those close and far across the land

Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him

you will not talk to him or listen or have pity as you kill him

thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death

youll be killing him yourself

and afterwards the hand of all the people. And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die

before he is comepletely dead you get your homeys to throw rocks at him to finish the job

because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God

because he is stealing your soul from god

which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage

the slaves brought the pagen myth with them from egypt

SO to break it down.

IMHO That is why if Christianity were to ever reintroduce its version of Sharia law to the approval of the world's 2.1 billion Christians it would set us back to the Dark Ages.

Can any Christians help me understand the context of this?

Its very simple if any of you kin tries to persaude you away from God kill them. The reason for this was during this time the Hebrews basically was hated by everyone around them(because they were an invading force.) so they needed unity and if there was influrence from the surronding cultures it could possibly destroy that unity.

i think we all know that people can find a way to justify anything if they really want to --don't we?

Why do you keep throwing OT verses at us? You know Christians don't follow those rules, because at least some of us believe that Jesus fulfilled the Law. That some of them still quote some of them for their own beliefs isn't right, either.

Yet Leviticus is still thrown around my many, many Christians. Actually most I have spoken to about that subject - which is one thing about Christianity that I find so confusing. I thought Jesus came to fulfil scripture, and the OT is always mentioned and is the basis for many sermons in churches - so what are you supposed to believe from it?

The only OT passages that still count are the ones that contradict evolution and condemn homosexuals. You know, the good passages.

That's how I see it.

That is a scary thought, but pretty true.

it was written for a people who had made a covenant with God. In that covenant, they accepted the mandate that they would worship only the True God Jehovah. They also accepted the judicial system which included the death penalty for certain crimes.

this was written only for the Jews under that covenant with God...it did not apply to anyone else but it certainly shows us how God views the worship of false gods.

The Jews thought that people did have other gods, some false but all less powerful than their "God".

This passage can be thought of as talking about "Traitors" Those people who followed the other gods were all enemies of the Jews, who sought to destroy them.

Some one who sought to subvert a Jew into another faith, were not only Traitors but were working to weaken the Jews from within. This passage indicates the danger both to their religion but to the safety of the people.

Even today Traitors are put to death.

No, it is an unemotional one. Murder is unlawful killing. If the highest law commands it, it cannot be murder.

Do you consider the death penalty murder?

Is this the "morality" that the Church teaches? That it is OK to kill others because your imaginary friend said it was OK?
It is not a question of morality, but of definition. The highest law supercedes all other law, and if the highest law sanctions or commands a death, it is not murder(unlawful killing).

And they say atheist are lacking in morals, but at least I know murder is wrong.
I know that as well :p

I've never said that I believe God will command killing... I believe quite the opposite. In truth, He has already specifically commanded me to abstain from violence.

I agree with you on this.
Which is another reason I think the death penalty is murder.

I think your position is only true on the contingency that god is benevolent. If god wants some evil done, such as the torture or killing of a toddler, that doesn't automatically make it ok. And you could argue he already does this, given that there are toddlers that die of excruciating diseases. And given hell, its clear your god has plenty of evil tendencies.

The crimes people are put to death for are usually homicidal in nature. They give the death penalty to their victims without a fair trial, without lawyers, or any kind of due process.
