Claiming What You Are Not.

Have you ever been tempted to claim to be something you are not, just to rile up a friend or acquaintence? I have a dear friend whose only flaw (in my eyes) is that he's so anti-Christian he can say nothing good about the religion without choking. I have for sometime been tempted to tell him that I'm converting to Christianity -- just to see the expression on his face. But I've been afraid he'll have a heart attack if I do. So, what about you? Have you ever been tempted to claim you were a Republican in order to astound a Democrat? Or claim you were a Democrat in order to astound a Republican? Or claim you were an atheist in order to astound a believer?

I don't think I've ever claimed that, but I have claimed I wasn't a Mormon to my parents. If that counts?!?! :)

Okay, I need to make a confession. I'm really a fourty year-old, three-hundred pound, heterosexual, fundamentalist Christian, male semi-truck driver from Iowa. Oh, that felt so good to get off my chest! :D

I, for one, can certainly understand why you would not have before now admitted to being from Iowa.

I told my friends I was going to vote for John Kerry once. It's a good thing I'm bigger then them.

Also, a Drunk girl at a bar asked me if I was the lead singer of Nickleback. I said, "why yes I am". She bought me drinks the rest of the night.

I LOVE messing with people like this. I go to the mall and always introduce myself as "Emaleigh McAlister" or "Annie Sawyer" or something like that.... never gets old *smiles* I live for the shock effect!

I used to claim to be 'what I am not' as a teenager; I lied compulsively - but that was an attention-seeking 'tool' to try and make myself feel more important. The trouble was that some of the tales I told followed me through to adulthood, through my parents......I never had the heart to contradict them. Now, of course, it is far too late.

I've been sorely tempted to act like a sexist whenever I am around my radical feminist friend who believes that all men should be registered as objects of women. I am exempt from this however because I am not heterosexual (not sure whether I'm pleased about that or not lol!). I never actually have, however, because 1) it wouldn't be very convincing and 2) I would hate to prove her right.

Claiming what I am seems to astound people enough. o.o

And I am a terrible liar- though I do have many Brasilians convinced my name is Jessica Wynn and I'm Canadian and adore Bush... but I think that is just because sarcasm is nonexistant here.

What a silly topic for a thread! In the long run, it's much harder to not be what you are than it is to be what you are. Putting on an act is more difficult than it looks. That's what I've found.

Hmmm ? What am I not ?

Actually , I usually allow others to come to their own conclusions . It is much more fun , and less work . ;)

Did she ask you to sing?
I can't think of any times I have done that to get someone going, but I do it quite often just to keep peace. I might start going to some random church just so my mom will still be convienced I'm Christian. Someone she knows saw me at a metaphysical shop, and told her I was thier, so know I have to really try hard.

I prefer to let people make assumptions and only clarifying where i feel it is nessicary.

Aslong as you seem agreeable they'll love you.

I am odd enough without having to make stuff up. I have accomplished enough without having to make stuff up. I freely admit my failures and my shortcomings.

Yes I love to do that. I am vague in answering questions and people believe what they want to believe. I do it because I am very insecure though and I dislike direct confrontation with people.

I have been putting on an act ever since I was 16 - that of a sane person.:D

Seriously though, I have had to 'put on an act' all through my working life. I had to put on an act not to show how useless I felt (self esteem had always been zero), and, each time I was put into a different job within the bank, I had to try and look as if I could carry it through.
That even included going to regional centers for training.........I used to get through bottles of sedatives for those occasions.

I can honestly say, that it was only after the death of my father (in '97) that I thought, Oh well, who cares ?

I think the actual person I am is quite shocking enough to not have to pretend to be anything else, though I do get a kick out of pretending I'm from different places when I'm on trips. Each trip, I adopt a new accent (British, Irish, Australian, etc), just to be silly, and talk with it throughout the entire trip. It drives my friends crazy.

Whenever someone asks me my religion--and I don't feel like explaining it--I just say that I'm Jewish. Afterall, I follow most of the mitzvot already.
