We all want to be happy. It’s human nature. But there’s another part of human nature – the ego – that constantly sabotages our happiness at every turn.

If we let it.

In order to be happy, we have to learn how the ego operates. We need to identify those destructive thought patterns that keep popping up, poisoning our lives with needless misery and stress.

In this article I’m going to point out some of the ego’s most common (and cunning) thought traps, so that you can become aware of them in your own life, in your own mind.

Becoming aware is the first step to freedom.

Once you can spot the ego’s tricks, you can learn to avoid them. Instead of falling into the trap, and an emotional downward spiral, you can shift your focus, and direct your thoughts in a healthy and positive way.

8 things we learned about love from Alain de Botton - yes - even JUST the timeout site yet 2 get 2 the others ..

Think you’re easy to live with? It’s an easy mistake to make. It turns out we’re all broken in some way. Be it that we’re broken from the way our parents loved us, or the way we understand love from Disney movies, we’re broken by the idea of what love should be. The problem is that we lack self-awareness about the many ways in which we are uniquely mad. Alain believes we should be swapping instruction manuals on the first date. Sadly, you can’t trust your friends to tell you the truth about your annoying ways; they just can’t be bothered to tell you. The best sources for information are your exes, or your parents.

A soul draws up a Life Plan before it is born

Human souls draw up a life plan before being reincarnated on earth. We decide in advance on the best environment for our own spiritual development, on such things as the country where we will be born, our language, family environment, financial circumstances, religion, education and occupation. We are confronted with human relationships and various troubles on earth but all these things are what we have planned for ourselves. Accordingly, when human relationships are at the root of our suffering, it is ourselves who decided to set these problems in our life plan. Sometimes people think that a husband and wife are not well-suited but, from a spiritual perspective, in fact it is the best possible pairing for their spiritual development. Couples are born promised to one another in order that they may learn a lot from their mutual differences.

Ultimate happiness - a few - eg -

Letting others dictate your life just might make others happy, but this usually happens at the cost of your own happiness. Making a few good decisions in your life that you don’t regret the least bit is far more fulfilling than making many decisions only to make others happy (and not yourself).

“Don’t tell me what happiness is,” a dear friend advised me as gently as she could, “Tell me what I need to do.” After some moments of righteous indignation—after all, I am a serious writer—I decided that breaking things down into doable steps is indeed helpful and that I can and will deliver, right on time for the holidays. Consider my ten steps to be ten gifts, more than you got for Hanukkah and less than you should get for Christmas. I even tell you, when to open your gifts, which is why they constitute a plan, the ultimate happiness plan that is, sanctioned by science, common sense, and Eastern wisdom. So, let the unraveling begin:

The Ultimate Happiness Plan

As soon as we deviate from the norm or find ourselves struggling with a problem, we tend to think that something is wrong with us. Because nobody embodies “normal” always, almost everybody experiences pain and anxiety over feeling different. A great deal of suffering stems from the fact that we so poorly relate to our so perceived imperfections. Instead of accepting that life is full of challenges and that imperfections are necessary variations of life, we pathologize ourselves and hope for a quick fix or at least a solution in the not-so-far future.

Unfortunately, we do not just visit with a clear-minded psychotherapist or other professionals who emphasize that supreme beings only exist in fantastic movies, of which we have more than ever before. All too many times we actually turn to the fantasy world for guidance and get advice from advertisements with photoshopped models. And God forbid our child deviates from the norm, is wild, too creative or displays any differences. The overwhelming majority relies on organizations, such as our schools, that are pressured to deliver perfect products: our children. None can be left behind, at least not without facing financial retributions.

A few Buddha quotes -

Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.

Speak only endearing speech, speech that is welcomed. Speech, when it brings no evil to others, is a pleasant thing.

Just as a mother would protect her only child with her life, even so let one cultivate a boundless love towards all beings.

I think to dwell continually on the dark side creates gloom and despair and anger and hatred, and that just adds to the darkness. So rather than that, we need to think of the beauty in the world, and also send out love and compassion to all beings in this world. Not just the people we like, but people who we find difficult. Because they are very deeply in need of compassion.

Buddhism is the most active one! The whole time, we're dealing with the mind and how to tame it, and how to transcend our ordinary conventional mind. This takes an enormous amount of determination and perseverance. It also requires an attitude of being relaxed and spacious, rather than tense and stressed. It's certainly not a matter of lying back and expecting it all to happen. If we don't make it happen, it won't!

We must be willing to be completely ordinary people, which means accepting ourselves as we are without trying to become greater, purer, more spiritual, more insightful. If we can accept our imperfections as they are, quite ordinarily, then we can use them as part of the path. But if we try to get rid of our imperfections, then they will be enemies, obstacles on the road to our ‘self-improvement’.

Want to always be happy

Found one that is the first I click on -

Want to Be Much Happier? Science Says Always Do Any 1 of These 8 Things

We all want to be happier and feel a greater sense of fulfillment. That's why I often write about what happy people do more often, about some of the habits of remarkably happy people, about things to stop doing so you can be happier at work, about simple daily habits of exceptionally happy people.

And recently I wrote about the difficult choices people make that make them happier, especially over the long haul.

Kevan Lee, the director of marketing for Buffer, also writes a lot about happiness.

Things to Stop Doing If You Want to Be Happy

Resisting darkness -

Life contains both dark and light.

It sounds counterintuitive, but when you embrace the darkness, you open the door to the light.

I’ve gone through some dark, depressive periods in my life. I used to resist them, a lot. Today I do it less.

I know that it is through these dark times that I learn the most. I dive inside. I breathe it all in, and I notice what it is that’s making me quiver with fear.

I investigate my internal reality and stay in the present moment.

This is hard to do when I’m feeling down. I want to run away to food, movies, games, books, and anything but the darkness.

But when I dive in, I see that the darkness is nothing but a virtual reality created by me. I look at the fear of not having enough, and I see that what I’m afraid of is a thought I choose to entertain.
