Community Service

I have been wanting to do something for the community with my free time for a long time. My problem as been my own selfishness (doing things for myself only) and others' (all the so-called community service groups that are actually businesses capitalizing on free labor).

I am sure that many people would help in their community if they new of a legitimate organization. I feel that we could share notes here.

Go to your state city and county websites. Many of the more legitmate organizations go through them or are connected to them insome way. The probation department in your country (under --county name cscd), will make people on probation do community service and can sometimes have a good resoucres of organizations although the probationers themselves will will not work with people often. A really good paying one is the United Way. They pay is poor(making it like a charity) but you give presentations at companies to get donations.

I would start out with an hour a week, see if it was something that you enjoyed doing and then give more time as needed. If you start scheduling your time you wil begin to see where there are openings and how much time you can give others. When I used to do the soup kitchen I used to put my Tuesday mornings aside. It helped the community and I learned how to cook for the multitudes. A very pleasant experience.

How did you find the soup kitchen?

that is what I mean. Many volunteer agencies are connected to the federal state and city. Community service is sometimes connected with volunteer work depending on the county you look at. The community service is in turned connected with the county probation department.

As far as Carrdero soup kitchens go they are connected to homeless projects like the salvation army for instance.

A good way to look for volunteer work is to find the pipeline instead of shop the organizations. By going to state/fed/county agencies you will find volunteer work and for soup kitchens they will be pipelined through a homeless program.

Here i found this too

I'm so happy to see this post! I really respect you for your concern.
All the advice that you have received here is very good, and could bring you the fullfillment you are looking for but I would like to add that sometimes people tend to overlook opportunities that are close at hand.I'm reluctant to speak of myself and my wife in a way that might be considered self aggrandizing, but since my contributions are really very small compared to others and this medium affords anonymity I'll indulge. I have a next door neighbor who is older than I am and his health is worse than mine so in the summer my wife and I try to do the majority of his yard work for him and help out in some small way. We both have our own health problems and we and our neighbor both have a little over an acre, so it is a bit of a chore to keep up with but I know that he and his wife are really thankful for the help. We live in the country so there many who have limited means. We have given away a ridding mower to a young couple who really didn't have enough to spare for simple needs let alone what some might consider a luxury. I sold a 25 ft. camper to another, for a little bit of nothing, the guy said he would not have had the opportunity to enjoy this type of activity with his family if we were not so generous. The same with a car. 100 dollars when I could have easily gotten 2500. And it was in very good shape. I feel very embarrassed to "crow" this way and I hope you understand that I am relating this info not in an effort to build myself up but to make the point that so many times in our everyday life we overlook opportunities to make a difference right where we live. And besides, None of you know who I am, you wouldn't recognize me if you saw me on the street. My contributions are really so small comparatively so what the heck! Just take a look around where you live and I'm sure you will see something that you can do, even if it's something small like my wife and myself. It could mean alot to someone who is in need. We continue to do small things like this whenever we can and it does give one a sense of giving back to the "spirit of man", (or woman). Good luck and Thankyou!

If you've got a special talent or skill (I'm sure you probably have many!) I suggest that it's very fulfilling to find a way of using that in serving the community. I volunteer (or used to, at least) chair massage for persons in rest homes and some local shelters in the area. The fact that you're helping people by doing something you enjoy makes it all the more rewarding.

You know you are absolutely right. I never thought of it like that. I will have to a little further than my house, as I don't see anyone that needs help, or that I would like to help, but I may just go to where I used to live in Tijuana and help there.

What I am really good at, I don't think my wife would appreciate me giving to others:D :jam: , but I think I may just volunteer at an orphanage in TJ.

The one I used to attend was held at Grace Episcopal Church. That doesn't mean that all soup kitchens are held at churches. Sometime they are set up at community halls, VFWs but they are usually set up about 20 miles apart from each other. Usually in larger cities where there is a homesless shelter you will find them.
