companies asking for facebook password?

I guess it would depend on the job. Some companies give you a credit card, expense account, car, nice office, great pay...... Just saying.

and if you have that sort of job you've usually earned it. They still have no right to ask for your password.

I would not ask, but if I was flying you around the world representing me at great expense and great possibilities for us all to make money, I might want to know everything about you I could.

and you wouldn't need my facebook password to find that out :p

They've got no right to cut corners on safety either, but on either count, sometimes people get desperate enough that they'll go along with unfair demands just to make sure their family stays fed and clothed.

And if I'm depending on you for my livelihood, I'd probably want to know everything about you, too. Should managers give their Facebook passwords to the people they manage?

And speaking for myself, I have nothing on my Facebook page that I'm ashamed of, but an employer even asking for my Facebook password would be a big red flag that they're not interested in respecting their employees.

It's like asking a prospective employee about their sexual orientation. Even if you're completely comfortable and open about it, the fact that an employer might make decisions based on it should set off all sorts of alarms.

and this is what really upset me....I thought you were hiring me for my potential knowledge and interest, not what my baseball team, political party, creed, and what kind of women I like....

I won't give anyone my password, but if they are insistent in regards to a job, I'd have no problem "friending" someone. Though, joke's on them really, I rarely, if ever, use the damn thing. Just have it for purposes of easy contact via PMs with a few friends and to know about class reunions and such. I can't recall the last time I even posted a status of any kind.

what the super-smart people will do is create a second FB..just for managers to look at...it will have boring pics of your grass growing; you likes will be long walks. What will be missing is your politics, religion, sports teams, favorite music, favorite books, and a host of things that define..you..as you. There will be no spicy messages between you and someone, no religious debates, no hard felt political statements, no moments of honest disclosure between you and a friend...no guilty pleasures, or rage filled diatribes revealed........it will be just a pic of you, three friends, and how much you love to garden, and watch the weather channel.

Another issue: while most of the people I've worked for have been decent, there are some real ******** out there in charge of companies. I wouldn't put it past some people to vandalize a former employee's Facebook page when he quits if they were able to do it.

Really?
You need my facebook password?

ok, but only after we BOTH sign an agreement that the second I hand over my facebook password, NOTHING on my facebook can be ever be held against me, cause YOU have access to my account and can post whatever you want.

in other words, the second they get my password is the same second that they invalidate everything on my facebook account as grounds for disciplinary action through the company.

I Love the sentiment..I do....but it like unringing a bell.

If I'm asked for it, the answer is "HELL NO!" Any business that would even ask is not a place I want to work.

Now, there are people who lack a personal filter and should not be on FB or any other social media. Some people forget that the inter-webs are open to the world.

And that's where the issue is. People are coerced into giving their passwords because they need jobs.

I don't understand why a password would be needed if they just want to see your page. A lot of pages are public anyway, and if they are not all that is needed is a "friending". Besides, one can "unfriend" them afterwards. If an employer pushed for a password, and they wouldn't listen to the fact that it is against the ToS for you to release it, and you actually do give it up, then they have just as much time to snoop as it takes you to access and change your password. I mean, you wouldn't have been lying...you DID give them the password, but for all they know you change your password every other day. ;)

The other techniques I've read about are employers insisting on friending their employee, or insisting on the employee or interviewee logging into his/her account in the presence of the interviewer/employer.

Just give them the password to one of the facebook accounts you no longer use.
like the one you used for snooping,
Or the one you use for helping your main account with the ridiculous neighbor requirements on the games....

What if I laugh and say I am an adult and not a tween, why would I have a fb page? Will they just assume I am lying? Can I sue for age or social discrimination if I am not "hip" enough to have a fb page?
