Comparing the US with Ancient Rome.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
Our political structure is modeled after ancient Roman and Greek systems

How similar can the US be compared with ancient Rome?

Is the US considered an Imperial power comparable with that of ancient Rome?

Do you think the US as a country, could or would arguably one day, follow in the footsteps of Rome's own rise and fall in the future?

Bonus question:

Our leaders today, are they just as crazy as those portrayed in ancient Rome?

Vast military hegemony, lots of special days and holidays, distractions galore, internal corruption, a system crumbling at the foundations, the big difference is we get to watch the decline and fall over wi-fi.

Once when I was in Washington, DC, some friends took me on a drive around downtown. The buildings there reminded me strongly of those two nations.

Maybe we need a "Who is Caesare" thread.

With the way Pence has remained in the background, quiet, and not his normal fire brandishing ways (he did, after all, say smoking won't kill you, he tried to disprove evolution to the state senate, and he's a staunch crusader against social issues), it wouldn't surprise me if Trump is Caesar and Pence is his Brutus, positioning himself to oust Trump as the 2020 Republican nominee. A stark raving lunatic who is immature, playing dangerous brinkmanship games, and a compulsive liar who has been hemorrhaging support, it's a good position for Mr. "Christian. Conservative. Republican. In that order." to step up and usurp the nomination, especially when he solidly has the Religious Right in his pocket and would be able to unify Republicans and get them behind him.
