Condoms for Kids

"– Medical groups have long advocated making condoms available in schools, and one Oregon district is taking that advice—even if it means making them available to especially young students.

The Gervais School District board voted unanimously last month to make condoms available to students from grade six [11 year olds] on up, the LA Times reports. Students will have to ask for the birth control specifically, however, and have a talk with a counselor, teacher, or administrator first."

Hmmm. I was born way too early.

I can't verify this, but shortly after I moved back here many years ago the scuttlebutt was that there were 3 pregnant 6th graders at my old elementary school. Now, perhaps there has been an issue like that in the school system introducing this.

It's not like they couldn't buy a box of condoms themselves, at a drug store.

I remember finding some porn in a bookstore when I was twelve. Porn is everywhere now, so kids aren't kids for very long.

Sounds about right, 11 is a realistic age.

Here in town there are gas station vending machines that dispense condoms for 25cents.

The (18 month old) article says that they have decided to make them available at the high school, hardly earth shattering news. To focus on the idea that the purpose is to make them available to 11 year olds is misleading. To make them available to the older students, technically, they become available to the younger students also. It is a technicality related to the decision to provide them for the high school students.

None of this means they would necessarily be given to 11 years olds, and they certainly weren't the target of the policy.

High and Middle schools, to put a fine point on it. And in case you're not aware, very, very little news is "earth shattering," so your remark is rather silly don't you think? Probably not. But just think. Here you are having read this non-earth shattering news anyway. BRAVO  to you Augustus.

Then you obviously know very little about the news business. If it wasn't for the fact that condoms are being made available to sixth graders there would never have been a story in the first place.

Of course not. According to the article, before any sixth grader would be given a condom they would have to have a talk with a counselor, teacher, or administrator first, who could very well deny their request.

That's pretty much the point.

If presented accurately it's a non-story.

Personally, I think it might be a good idea to require IUDs as a condition of admission to public high schools.
