We learning about it in my college classes. Basically kids at a certain age have a tendency to focus on one characteristic of a situation and solely focus on that and draw conclusions and as a result don't realize if you altar an object that it doesn't change the size of the object. Here is a video that shows what I mean:
i just found it fascinating. The kid even counted the quarters but because her brain isn't fully developed and shes still learning size and distance and logic and such when the quarters were lined up with one line longer then the other she thought they weren't the same number of quarters.

What age were the children? The liquid one is a well-known illusion, but the coins one I found more surprising.
