Coronavirus cases spiking at record levels in Europe

Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Coronavirus cases are surging at record levels in Europe where the disease has had an up, down and up situation since the pandemic hit early this year.

On Sunday, the continent reported 250,386 of the world's 352,574 infections, which is 71.0 percent compared with Saturday's 249,113 of the world's 452,895 infections, which is 45.4%. Europe's percentage of deaths was less, at 36.3% with 1,273 of the world's 3,506 total fatalities after Saturday's 28.9% with 1,617 of the world's 5,599 total fatalities.

Fueled by cases surging in Europe and the United States, they hit a world-record 490,737 Friday. At this rate, the world is adding 1 million cases every two days compared with every three days the previous week. One week ago Friday, it passed 400,000 for the first time.

So far Sunday, the death toll is 1,157,818 and cases hit 43,270,814.

Europe ranks fourth with a total of 8,392,135 cases, compared with 13,151,565 in Asia, 10,629,144 in North America, 9,332,366 in South America, 1,726,990 in Africa, 35,893 in Oceania and none in Antarctica, according to Worldometers.info.

North America has the most deaths with 345,602 compared with 234,360 in Asia, 287,195 in South America, 41,301 in Africa and 959 in Oceania.

The United States for months has led in deaths, now at 225,197 and cases, 8,626,537, including a record 83,757 infections Friday then 83,718 Saturday, according to Johns Hopkins tracking. The nation represents 4% of the world's population but about 20% of the deaths.

The nations are reporting record spikes in cases in the past week.

On Sunday, Britain announced 19,790 cases three days after a record 26,688. Also, Britain reported 151 deaths with the daily high 1,172. Last week, Britain's high in death was 241 on Tuesday, which was the highest since 253 on June 5.

Countries are reimplementing the lockdowns and some are imposing curfews.

Tonight at 20:00 President Macron will be detailing new regulations with the intention of reducing the alarming increase in Covid-19 cases.

People in France are rightfully expectant with considerable speculation on how harsh the new measures will be.

Personally i am hoping for mandatory mask wearing while outside the home and an extension to the curfew recently imposed on the worst hit towns and cities.

So, from friday France goes into full lockdown at least until early december.

Essentially the same as the restrictions of earlier this year with the exception that schools etc, public transport, doctors, will remain open. The measures will be reviewed fortnightly.

Essential shops/services will also remain open

An attestation (self signed documents) will be required for anyone leaving home.

Peope are asked to remain at home where possible.

NFL plans to limit fan capacity, require masks for Super Bowl LV

Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Amid the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the NFL is moving forward with a plan to limit fan capacity at Super Bowl LV this February.

In a statement released Wednesday, the league said it is planning to hold capacity to 20% at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Raymond James Stadium, which typically seats 65,000 fans. With temporary seating, the stadium's capacity could increase to almost 75,000.

Fans in attendance will be in pods six feet apart, and masks will be required.

"The safety of the public, attendees, players and personnel continues to be our foremost priority," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement Wednesday. "We are working on a host of Super Bowl plans, including gameday, in conjunction with the host committee and the appropriate local and county public health and government officials.

Looks like quite a surge hitting El Paso and Ciudad Juarez.

Virus pushes twin cities El Paso and Juarez to the brink

A record surge in coronavirus cases is pushing hospitals to the brink in the border cities of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, confronting health officials in Texas and Mexico with twin disasters in the tightly knit metropolitan area of 3 million people.

Health officials are blaming the spike on family gatherings, multiple generations living in the same household and younger people going out to shop or conduct business.

The crisis — part of a deadly comeback by the virus across nearly the entire U.S. — has created one of the most desperate hot spots in North America and underscored how intricately connected the two cities are economically, geographically and culturally, with lots of people routinely going back and forth across the border to shop or visit with family.

That's VERY strict.

Most of the US is going into the toilet but in California, many counties still have it under control. Our 4-stage system with two week reviews will hopefully be enough to reign in negative trends before they get out of control.
