Coronavirus Cases:

Deaths:

Recovered:

I'm unclear about which group "Recovered" refers to, and what use that figure actually is. There are apparently 25 million people who caught coronavirus but aren't recorded as dying or recovering. But since deaths are likely to be recorded, I assume the remaining 25 million recovered.

It looks to me like case and death numbers are the only two meaningful figures here.

Recoveries = this statistic is highly imperfect, because reporting can be missing, incomplete, incorrect, based on different definitions, or dated (or a combination of all of these) for many governments, both at the local and national level, sometimes with differences between states within the same country or counties within the same state. WHO recommends following the criteria of [symptoms resolve + 2 negative tests within 24 hours] or [symptoms resolve + additional 14 days], but this is only a recommendation. In some countries, when a patient is discharged from the hospital it is counted as "recovered" even if no test is performed. Some health officials now consider anyone who was diagnosed with COVID-19 three or more weeks ago and has not died to be recovered from the disease. In view of this, "Active Cases" and "Closed Cases Outcome" which both depend on the number of recoveries (in addition to an accurate death count and a satisfactory rate of case detection, both of which are lacking in the vast majority of countries) can be affected by this inherent flaw for many countries and for the total worldwide count.

I'd suspected this to be the case, given that corona is a respiratory virus. I smoked for about 30 years.
Hopefully corona will encourage more current smokers to give up. Though actually a lot of people seem to have switched to e-cigarettes.
A little over four years ago I switched from smoking two plus packs a day to vaping.
Which is much different from e-cigarettes.

All travelers must now provide negative COVID-19 test to enter U.S. - UPI.com

Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Beginning Tuesday, all travelers who enter the United States through any airport nationwide must show that they have recently tested negative for COVID-19.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the rule two weeks ago as a measure to tamp down on the spread of the virus through U.S. airports.

Under the new rule, passengers must provide a negative COVID-19 test no more than 72 hours before their flight.

"If you plan to travel internationally, you will need to get tested no more than three days before you travel by air into the United States and show your negative result to the airline before you board your flight," the CDC said in a statement Tuesday.

Many other countries have already been requiring negative tests for travelers, but the United States has been less strict in travel requirements.

The CDC also recommends that travelers are tested three to five days after travel and that they stay home to self-quarantine for seven days after travel.

"Even if you test negative, stay home to self-quarantine for the full 7 days," the agency said.

The Biden administration on Monday dismissed an order by the Trump administration to lift a coronavirus ban on travelers from Britain, Ireland, Brazil and most of Europe. The order would have taken effect Tuesday.

A little more good news on the horizon, 2 new vaccines are undergoing approval testing.

Novavax’s new vaccine is very effective against the new british strain but unfortunately not against the new African varient.

Novavax vaccine protects people against COVID variants

And the Janssen vaccine is apparently not quite as effective as those currently in use but has the advantage of being a single shot.

Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine is 85% effective against severe cases, and 66% effective overall per trial data – TechCrunch

CDC issues order requiring masks on public transportation - UPI.com

Jan. 30 (UPI) -- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued an order requiring people to wear masks while using public transportation.

The order applies to passengers and workers on public conveyances, such as airplanes, ships, ferries, trains, subways, buses, taxies and ride shares.

"People must wear masks that cover both the mouth and nose when awaiting, boarding, traveling on, or disembarking public conveyances," the CDC order, issued late Friday, said. "People must also wear masks when entering or on the premises of a transportation hub in the United States."

The CDC order takes effect 11:59 p.m. EST Monday.

The federal agency issued the order based on President Joe Biden's executive action requiring mask-wearing on certain modes of transportation. The executive order issued last week also required compliance with recommended self-quarantine after entering the United States.

"We are prepared to make sure that we use all relevant authorities to enforce the president's executive order to ensure that across every mode of transportation workers, passengers, commuters are protected," Transportation Secretary nominee Pete Buttigieg said at his confirmation hearing last week.

The Senate commerce committee voted Wednesday to advance the former South Bend, Ind., mayor's nomination to a full Senate vote, which has not been scheduled.

They've been requiring masks on the buses here for the past several months. "No mask, no ride."

Mexico approves Russian Sputnik V vaccine, signs deal for supply | Reuters

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico has approved emergency use of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine after signing a contract for millions of doses of the product, Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell said on Tuesday.

In a morning news conference, Lopez-Gatell said Mexico’s contract provided for 7.4 million doses between February and April, with more due in May.

“This gives us an enormous opportunity to accelerate vaccination in Mexico,” said Lopez-Gatell, whose country began using the Pfizer vaccine in December.

Later, at an evening news conference, Lopez-Gatell said Mexican health regulator COFEPRIS had authorized Sputnik V for emergency use.

Mexico is trying to secure as much vaccine supply as possible for its 126 million people following delays of some products amid a global scramble for vaccines.

It seems there's quite a scramble for vaccines world-wide.

I hope this one works out. It sounds great.

Powerful Antiviral Treatment for COVID-19 Discovered That Could Change How Epidemics Are Managed

In this ground-breaking study, the team of experts found that the plant-derived antiviral, at small doses, triggers a highly effective broad-spectrum host-centered antiviral innate immune response against three major types of human respiratory viruses — including Covid-19.

The key features based on cell and animal studies, which make thapsigargin a promising antiviral are that it is:

    • effective against viral infection when used before or during active infection
    • able to prevent a virus from making new copies of itself in cells for at least 48 hours after a single 30-minute exposure.
    • stable in acidic pH, as found in the stomach, and therefore can be taken orally, so could be administered without the need for injections or hospital admission.
    • not sensitive to virus resistance.
    • at least several hundred-fold more effective than current antiviral options.
    • just as effective in blocking combined infection with coronavirus and influenza A virus as in single-virus infection.
    • safe as an antiviral (a derivative of thapsigargin has been tested in prostate cancer).

Johnson & Johnson asks FDA to approve COVID-19 vaccine - UPI.com

Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Johnson & Johnson has submitted an application to the Food and Drug Administration for regulators to give its coronavirus vaccine emergency use authorization.

The pharma company announced the move Thursday. If the request is approved, Johnson & Johnson expects to supply 100 million doses of the vaccine to the United States during the first half of this year.

Chief scientific officer Paul Stoffels said the FDA application "is a pivotal step toward reducing the burden of disease for people globally and putting an end to the pandemic."

Overall, the company said its drug has a 85% efficacy rate in preventing severe disease and has "demonstrated complete protection against COVID-19 related hospitalization and death" after 28 days.

The company said the vaccine was tested against a variant strain of the disease in South Africa, which is part of the reason for its lower efficacy there. Health experts have said existing vaccines will be effective against mutant strains, but likely not as effective as they are against the original coronavirus.
