correcting my sleep/waking patterns

For various reasons (that I won't go into here) my sleeping/waking pattern is now currently way out of kilter

I now go to sleep at around 3am and cannot get up until around 2pm, if not later

It's severely messing with my life and stops me doing lots of things, some of them quite important

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can correct this?

I've tried going to bed earlier, but that doesn't work, I just lie there awake and then go to sleep at the usual time

And I've tried making my alarm clock go off slightly earlier but it has now lost its power to wake me

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm very annoyed at myself because of all this

A new alarm clock and not within reach when you're in bed.

Alternatively: a cat.

You can't go to bed earlier and expect to fall asleep. To reset your sleep/wake pattern you need be real tired. I.e. skip a sleep cycle and then go to bed earlier.

Wouldn't work, I'm totally zonked out on anti-psychotics and prescription painkillers

Once I'm asleep I'm out of it for at least 12 hours

I've been off the painkillers (that I've been on for about three months) and the chronic pain (that I was suffering from a bad back and nerve pain in my legs) has not yet returned, maybe it will take a few more days to get them all out of my system?

Hopefully I won't need them anymore and my back has now healed, it was never a long term solution

I certainly hope so

Not an option for me right now, for various reasons

I've tried that but it doesn't stick, the established routine always returns

Maybe once the prescription painkillers that I've stopped taking are out of my system this will be more of an option

No electronics and exercise to exertion for an hour before bed is what I have done when it got bad enough.
I've heard that it's best to avoid looking at a screen up to an hour before trying to sleep, I have plenty of books to read, I should probably log off RF and read one of them! It's so messed up it is unbelievable, it is ten past one in the morning and I'm just about to put the oven on to have my dinner :(

When you say it's lost its power to wake you, do you mean you do not hear it, or do you mean you roll over, shut it off, and go back to sleep?

If it's the former, get a louder and more annoying alarm clock. If it's the latter, plug your alarm clock in at the other side of the room so you have to get out of bed and walk across the room to turn it off.

The cat was the nuclear option. :p

Hopefully as you come off the meds things will get better. What about a pain relief gel, rather than pills? Have a chat with a pharmacist.

My brother in law is on antipsychotics, over the years he's been prescribed most of them. Some made him hibernate for up to 18 hours a day. With some he has a normal sleep pattern.

Speak to your psychiatrist, he may change your prescription to something that doesn't zonk you out so much.

Just a thought, a while ago i was put on steroids for a month, sleep during that time eas close on impossible. Have you been on steroids for your back problem?

My friend has an alarm clock with wheels, might be an option if anyone needs more of a challenge.
