I love both versions, really. But this one is every bit as beautiful as the first.

While I strongly disagree, I admire the fact you know that's a cover at all, and where it came from. Almost everyone I speak with on the topic seems oblivious to that fact.
I agree with @Watchmen - I like Johnny Cash's version better.

There's only one song I know where Johnny Cash and someone else did a song, but the non-Cash version is better:

I'm just not a Cash fan, but I am a huge Nine Inch Nails fan, so its no surprise from me.

Cash didn't know it was a cover himself. His managers(or whatever the proper title is for such in the music industry) didn't tell him where the song came from, and changed the lyric "crown of **** " to "crown of thorns" without telling him, knowing he'd refuse if he heard the original. I'm not sure whether or not he ever did learn he'd covered a song.

I hadn't heard that story. The album he recorded it for (American IV) was all covers.

I had to Google it. I found this article quoting Rick Rubin, describing how Johnny Cash listened to the NIN version before recording his (and at first turning it down because the style was so different from his): Johnny Cash Hurt: Why did Johnny Cash cover Hurt before he died? True story

That's interesting! A bit different than the story I read. Wish I could remember what magazine, but that was too many years ago.

This is my favorite cover of all time. I think it's significantly better than the original version by Bob Seger:

Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt is my second favorite:
