Covid vaccine is here

Pretty sure last I heard Pfizer's vaccine will not be ready until the end of next year. That was as of this morning.
No it is this year. Stock markets have shot up, esp. the airlines and related manufacturers, e.g. Rolls-Royce.

BUT, it will take time to get it out and into the population. Not only do they have to make millions of doses, but it requires two shots, several weeks apart and the vaccine has to be transported and stored at -80C! Not straightforward.
I expect, though, that the most at-risk groups and health workers may get it by the end of spring or so. And then we can all relax a bit.

The Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine is not far behind. No idea how well their trials have gone, but earlier reports were good. (Important not to have a monopoly supplier of something like this.)

One important thing about this work is that the vaccine is said to be 90% effective, which is very good. I heard Sir John Bell of Oxford on the lunchtime news saying the great significance of this is that an effective vaccine is now confirmed to be possible. This was not certain up to now at all. With some diseases it isn't. So if one route works, another route may also work.

IMO, then it would seem like the average person is still not going to be seeing a vaccine until sometime in the middle to end of next year. Barring any additional complications. Like you say at risk groups will probably recieve it first, and that will probably eat up at least 1st quarter 2021.

Yes I expect you are right, but that's OK, because what we are all struggling with is the at-risk groups getting it all at once and not only dying but clogging up the hospitals while they do so. Once that has been sorted, we are just vaccinating to get herd immunity to squash the infection in the general population, who don't (usually - there are some nasty exceptions) get very ill.
