Culture Wars

With all this talk about a "Culture" war, I thought I would post the definitions of what Culture means, and then follow that up with a thought thread.

"1.
the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.

2.
the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group.
"Caribbean culture". "

So, now that we are in agreement on what constitutes Culture. What is it, that you think, keeps a Culture alive within a particular group or nation. What exactly is the lifeblood of "Culture" and how do we foster it so that it works for good rather than harming others?

I think cultures are organic - they develop and change through a variety of means. They intermingle with other cultures and rub off on each other. Then there are sub-cultures within a larger culture - which might be what's in play when people talk of "culture wars," although in practice, it seems like a war over people's conflicting ideas of political conformity. There are those who believe that in order to be a "good American," one must fall in line with certain traditional cultural practices, be a good patriot and conform, assimilate, etc. But in opposition to that are those who believe that people should be free to do their own thing and partake whichever culture they wish (although that can sometimes bring up the issue of "cultural appropriation," which also somehow figures into this whole "culture war" business).

Cultures may disappear or be transformed into something else. As long as humanity lives on as a sentient, semi-intelligent species (well, we can always hope), then culture will take care of itself. If people want to fight a war over culture, then I guess that's what they'll do.

In the end, I think rock and roll will be the ultimate victor in any culture war.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
A fight between the stability associated with the traditional, facing the inevitability of consistant dynamic change, culture is always temporary with a shelf life. It can be short lived or span centuries.

Sometimes people get culture shock and have trouble with adjusting. They lash out.

Culture war is political whereas culture itself isn't. IMO

Oof... In this day and age, rock has kind of fallen off. Unfortunately rock hasn't been able to pump out any new artists of note outside of heavy metal. All the most influencial rock groups/artists have been in the main stream for more than 20 years. The same can't be said for other genres, it seems

What about Politics isnt Cultural? Politics is most decidedly a part of ones Culture.

Did the Egyptians want a Pharaoh because it was politically useful, or because it was a Cultural necessity? I'd argue both.

It's still rock and roll to me.
