Danish professor: Porn belongs in the classroom

"A leading sexologist in Denmark has called for pornography to be shown in the classroom, claiming that starting a debate about the industry could help teenagers become “conscientious and critical consumers” who are able to tell the difference between pornography and the reality of sexual relationships.

Prof Christian Graugaard of Aalborg University caused a furore in Denmark when he suggested on public television that pornography should be shown in schools. This was preferable, he told the Danish public broadcaster DR, to sex education classes that were “boring and technical, where you roll a condom onto a cucumber”.

Porn again! Good grief give us the cucumber.

“My proposal is to critically discuss pornography with 8th and 9th graders [age 15 – the legal age of consent in Denmark – and 16 respectively] as part of a sensible didactic strategy, carried out by trained teachers,” he told the Guardian.

“We know from research that a vast majority of teenagers have seen porn at an early age – so it’s not a question of introducing youngsters to porn,” he added. According to one Nordic study, 99% of boys and 86% of girls in Scandinavia have already seen pornographic films by the time they’re 16. What Graugaard wants is to make sure teens “possess the necessary skills to view porn constructively”.

Porn is everywhere now, so yes it absolutely MUST be shown, discussed and analysed in the classroom. We need to give children the tools to understand and criticise porn and the porn industry.

Something like that in the US would just reaffirm my decision to homeschool, really. Not that I think a little classy porn would be the worse thing in the world or in school systems.

I think it is a lot like sex education, not talking about it doesn't make the problem go away.

Not sure about "children", but older teens and on up, sure.

I understand. Why let the schools show all the porn when you can homeschool your kids with it right in the privacy of their own bedrooms.

FYI The Prof is suggesting DISCUSSING porn in class, not watching it.

Yeah, I'm surprised there isn't already a pretty comprehensive multi-day class for these types of things.

When I was a kid at school they showed us a film of a woman giving birth. Unfortunately the film had been loaded into the projector backwards - so 25 13 year olds are watching a movie that begins with a rather exhausted looking woman holding a baby. And then all hell broke loose. I had nightmares for years.

Think the article must have if the second paragraph is bogus :p

If it's simply discussing porn, it doesn't even seem newsworthy.
It's not at all bogus, it is just talking about showing porn as a part of a program of education - as opposed to the kids watching porn movies.

We had something like this, except it was showing indecent 80s music video clips with the teacher commenting how vile and Satanic it was.

Boys boys boys...

it didn't work

You don't sound too critical of it at all. Mission accomplished.
