Is it sad and pathetic that I don't get it?

No, it's just a matter of being familiar with at least the idea of computer coding (computer programmer/engineer) and medical coding (when a patient goes into cardiac arrest).

Coding is good, from a software engineer's standpoint, thus the happy face. Coding is bad from a doctor/patient's standpoint, thus the dismayed face.

Dark humor is so human. It's a coping method, and can give a sense of belonging or membership in a group that is recognized from one member to another when it's shared. It can hone a point brilliantly, and illustrates the capacity for human resilience in the face of adversity.

Context changes things though. If you're outside the group pretending membership it puts a different spin on it, or if you use it from outside the group to put down the group.

Never knew coding was a term in the medical world.
Thanks for explaining.
