It seems to me that an ehtnograpgher might classify the death penalty and certain other muslim practices as "medical" as Muslims believe this will ward off punishment from Allah. Because this punishment might take the form of a disease as well as an earthquake or a flood, the death penalty has a (putatively) medical function.
