Defamation of Religion, Rushdie, and upping the ante

No belief or idea should be held above critique and scrutiny.

I see the war between christians and muslims is still going strong after hundreds of years.

The irony being that both Islamic and Christian fundamentalists are peas in a pod, and the actual war is between them and secularism.

Apparently that characterizes Islamophobia.

I think 'Islamophobia' is something of a problematic word. Some people seem to take it to be criticism of Islaam (as a set of beliefs/ideas). Others as hatred of Muslims because they are Muslims (or brown or black people). Often it's conflated with prejudice and racism. Islamophobia as criticism of particular ideas (note that Islaam covers a broad spectrum of beliefs, ideas and practices - it is not a monolithic thing, so we should be careful about what exactly we are criticising) seems to be perfectly reasonable. If we are accused of being Islamophobic on these grounds, that shouldn't stop us fighting against (highly) objectionable ideas. Who gives a **** what other people think? But Islamophobia as hatred towards all Muslims or code for prejudice or racism on grounds of ethnicity is much less reasonable and should itself be fought against.
