Diablo 3...

Do you 'know' or believe?
All true (except the blizzard remark) lol

Ahhhh for the days of planescape torment, baldur's gate and other real, substantial RPGs without this mandated massively multiplayer experience (even for single player)

edit: planescape torment... wow i am showing my age, but in my defence, i played it well after its release.... it is still perhaps one of my favourite RPGs of all time and by far has one of the best storylines (not line, lines) and implementation of those storyline in any RPG with the exception of the graphics and clunky interface, which to be fair were a very high standard for back in its day.

- Mandating an online connection for a single player game
It is extremely annoying, but I think they do this to limit piracy and hacking.

- Incorporating a real-cash electronic item purchase system
What I don't like about this sort of thing is when a player's success and progress in a game is determined by how much cash he spends rather than by his skill and strategy, which is what real games should be about.

It is actually a good strategy to combat illegal 3rd party gold farmers.

Oh i understand the reasoning for it.... but having a need to register the darn product online should be enough; mandating an online service to be installed is too much in my opinion, to take that one step further and require constant online service to maintain authentication is disgusting - even if i understand they are attempting to control their intellectual property. For me, this merely means I do not buy their games OR, if I really want that game, then I am not willing to spend nearly as much to purchase it.

Same... but it is more endemic of a larger problem in game design, which is attempting to incorporate additional MMO features into a single (or limited multi) player experience, largely because the business (not necessarily development) team is too lazy or greedy to make a real single (or limited multi) player game, as well as their MMO offering, instead they want to develop an MMO game with a single (or limited multi) player facade - they are increasingly unwilling to provide a dedicated single (or limited multi) player experience.

If i wanted to play MMO games i would do just that... please dont diminish once outstanding single (or limited multi) player franchises (and even entire genres) to incorporate the MMO features... all that results is a second rate single (or limited multi) player gaming experience.

I agree. The SPAMbots all but ruined public games in D2, and what with the advent of JSP and "forum gold" people had an unfair advantage over less lucky players from ladder season to ladder season.

Update: My incredibly powerful Barbarianess is now a whopping level 7 and heading into some crypt or summin... sort of like hack'n'slashing through jello because of all the 3D eye candy.... then again, I am running at 1280 x 1024 with MAX gamma set.

Minsc scary.... where the heck did he hide boo to avoid it getting found by the guards!?!?! nooooo

But i agree, the level of character design was much higher in those games, one of the major reasons for this is because the number of characters was less.... personally I do not mind that approach (let modders add more characters if they like, focus on giving me indepth awesome characters, not a stack of them... though I do like suikoden i must admit)

Bought D3 the other day.

I'm enjoying it and i just finished taking out the butcher (i love that they bought him back).

I'm using the demon hunter and she's kicking *** but lets face it i love the hunter archetype.

Has anyone used the monk? I'm wondering if it's any good.

I just entered Act 2 with a monk.
So far the monk is favorite character.
The witch doctor is ok, at least so far.
the barbarian is just a cake walk through everything so far.

My wizard is only level 4, demon hunter level 2...

Got a lvl 16 demon hunter and lovin it.

I especially like that you are basically forced, with the DH anyways, to use a variety of skills for different situations.
Got one really strong enemy? Rapid fire.
Got a tight nit group? Bola shot.
Got a large spread out group? Chakram.

My wizard is now level 9.

I found out that if you join general chat while playing, you do not get disconnected every five minutes

I'd love to get this game, I really enjoyed 1 and 2.
Unfortunately, the fact you need to be on-line to play is a bit off-putting... what if I want to play someplace without internet?

wa:do

ps.. I'm a bit sad they don't have the druid anymore.

My sole character, so far, is a Barbianette called YmirGF (go figger, eh) (clvl 18)
Just killed the Butcher in normal and am wandering through the beginning of act 2.
So far, I like what I see. D3 reminds me a LOT of an old game called Darkstone that we used to play when Diablo and even Hellfire had gotten long in tooth, prior to the release of Diablo II.

Bumped my resolution down to 1024 x 768 and it is a much more fluid and less akin to working through jello. Also had my first game with a friend last night. You simply invite and voila.
